To the editor:
Our company has all gone home. The house is quiet now, but it's great to remember what a wonderful time we enjoyed during the EL All-Class Reunion.
Jeannie Casto Dunlevy, my first grade friend from Glenmoor in 1937, returned from Fredrick, Maryland, as did Francis Bentz from Stuart, Florida, and they both enjoyed the old guard luncheon with us on Friday. The EL High School students served, cleaned the tables and even valet parked our cars. The food was great and along with our dedicated Frank Dawson, with a lot of gusto we all sang our ELHS alma mater.
We all decked out in patriotic costumes and rode in a little train in the parade on Saturday. Don Vaness dressed as Uncle Sam and Jack Pease, Ginny Conkle, Mary Ann Wright, Dick McCullough and myself, all of us over 90 years old, sang "Yankee Doodle Dandy", but it was so very, very hot!! In my mind, the greatest parade entry was Herman Hoppel's donkeys. It's hard to imagine how much effort it took him to feed, brush, halter, check their shoes and convey them with that big pretty wagon that they were hitched to, then to have to take it all apart and take them back home again. They have big dark eyes and so soft noses and never fussed a bit. That had to be a lot of work and surely a lot of effort. Thanks to him for allowing us to view these beautiful animals.
Everyone was so happy to be together and to get to meet old friends again. Donna Best and I decorated the carriage house window. Many other windows were also decorated, but a very special thanks goes to Jeff Kreefer, our local council man and ex-fireman, who made pictures available for the empty windows, so people would have something to look at instead of empty store windows. Jeff and his fellow EL Fire Dept. members hung up the lights all around town and from the bottom of my heart, I thank all the people who contributed money to buy those lights and to Jeff and the firemen for hanging them.
Thanks to the EL Alumni Association for their many hours of selling souvenirs. Thanks to the musicians who provided so much entertainment. Thanks to all the food people that provided places to eat. The hot dog shop and donut shop stayed open all night to accomodate all the people.
Thank you to the EL Police Department for keeping law and order and to the garbage dept. for cleaning up after us.
Thank you Drew Cooper, the EL president of the EL Alumni Association, and to Mayor Bricker, our whole little town looked so pretty and really came to life for a few days. Everyone had such a good time. I'm sorry for those that had to miss it.
