To the editor:
After having recently joined the volunteers at the Columbiana County Humane Society, I wanted to write a short summary of what the agency is doing.
Each and every day, they care for dogs, cats and a menagerie of other animals at their small home along state Route 45, south of Salem, next to the Circle K. The building is the former business home of Dr. Thomas Liggett, longtime area veterinarian. While the building lends itself somewhat to animal care, it is quite small for its current needs.
Board members, employees and volunteers talk and dream about being able to expand the space to provide a better setting for their friends. That plan is, of course, down the road and would require much planning and fundraising.
A more immediate need is caring for the everyday needs. The agency receives no funding from local, state, or federal government. A trust fund has proven to be a lifesaver to meet current needs, but expenses such as food, bedding, medications, and veterinarian bills make it a real challenge. At approximately $300 per animal for a check-up has them digging into their pocketbook. Just last week, nine dogs were brought to the agency in need of a foster home. Ka-ching: $2,700!
We have invited the children of Columbiana County to help us out with a "Pennies for Paws" drive. They are doing a great job in their respective elementary and middle schools in the drive which runs from May 2-13. Winning schools will receive donated trophies and other awards at the conclusion of the event.

If you would like your donation to be included for your home school, where your children or grandchildren attend, where a family member teaches or works, that would be wonderful.
