With so much political division in Washington, it's important to spotlight the moments of bipartisanship that we see break through. That's why it's relieving to see Senator Rob Portman involved in work with other senators from both sides of the aisle to reform the Electoral Count Act (ECA).
The confusion and chaos that followed the 2020 election is in large part due to the fact that, in its current state, the ECA is not completely clear on the role of Congress in presidential elections. The law needs to be clarified to prevent anything like what happened after the last election from occurring again in 2024, and to ensure the security and integrity of future elections. Thankfully, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle recognize this, and the reforms they're working on would accomplish just that.
Lawmakers should also take other steps to protect the integrity of elections in the future beyond reforming the ECA. By putting measures in place that protect election workers and providing the Election Assistance Commission with the funding it needs, we can avoid the problems we saw after the 2020 election.
I am thankful for Senator Portman's leadership in these bipartisan talks, and hope that other members of Congress will join him to pass these important reforms. Protecting the integrity of our elections is absolutely critical, and should be a point where lawmakers from both parties can come together to do what is right for the sake of our nation.
