To the editor:
In reference to the letter to the editor on Wednesday, April 8 by Ronald J. Price regarding his displeasure with the Morning Journal for publishing a column by Jules Witcover. He strenuously disagreed with the content of the article and chastised the Morning Journal for printing an opinion piece which apparently differed from his own point of view.
Unlike Mr. Price I wish to congratulate the Morning Journal editorial staff for printing syndicated columnists from a variety of political backgrounds. As the only newspaper covering Columbiana County, the Morning Journal has a particular responsibility to not only report local news, but to present a balanced larger picture of the state and country for its readers.
When did we Americans become so intolerant of other people’s ideas? When did we become so judgmental, labeling another’s opinions bad/wrong if they don’t agree our own political persuasion? At times this is carried to the point of shunning friends and family! Whether or not you are conservative or liberal or somewhere in between is not the point. Sure, when you have strong ideas about how the government should be run or how our elected representatives should behave, you will agree/disagree with others. If you read something with which you take exception, it can be an opportunity to examine why you disagree and either confirm your own position or gather more information and re-think your ideas on the subject.
After all, an opinion is just that an opinion, a point of view based on your own background/upbringing, education and life experience. How boring if we were all the same!
As Mr. Price states, this is a time for Americans to pull together. Tolerance of others would go a long way in achieving that goal.
