Reacts to Congress and Emergency Relief Bill

2 min read

To the editor:

I’m a 67-year-old grandpa of seven children. Semi-retired teacher and just for full disclosure, a Republican (although that party, as I knew it, has virtually disappeared) and was a never-Trumper in 2016.

Like most conservatives I view all government through a prism of skepticism. But I am doing what the crisis team is telling us. Staying in as much as possible; washing hands more than I ever did in my life (somewhere in heaven my mother is smiling and say ’bout time!); and practicing social distancing. I have trusted our elected officials to be truthful and handle this in a bipartisan way.

Then I saw Senator Ben Sasse’s (R- Nebraska) presentation to the Senate as they tried to hammer out the Emergency Relief Bill we now have. If you haven’t already, take 50 minutes and watch the listed links to youtube. Please! This is not some joke video. This is not a prank. It is not some sound bite snippet taken out of context. It is just Sen. Sasse addressing the Senate for the record. The first one is 15 minutes and is just a common sense request as to what is needed to be done. The second link listed is 33 minutes and is chapter-and-verse what the Congressional Democrats tried to pull and it is disgraceful.

Every American needs to know this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXpaJIvJmJs

And just so everyone that reads this understands: I get it. I’m not stupid. I have taught Social Studies for over 40 years and I know this is generally how politics works. But I’m sorry. In this time of crisis the Congressional Democrats should be ashamed. And any Republican that goes along with this disgrace should be ran out of office. Thank God Sen. Sasse is one of the very few adults in the room.
