"Ryan a convenient scapegoat for Trump's failure." Ridiculous.
Many conservative journalists consider the failure of passing the American Health Care Act in the House of Representatives a failure of President Trump's leadership. (See Jonah Goldberg's column in your March 31 issue).
However, President Trump placed the blame exactly where it belonged: the House Republican leadership and the "Freedom Caucus." The defeat displayed what we have known for quite a while. The Republican Party, stronger than ever at the federal and state level, is simply not listening to the American voter. Trump is.
The main reason the Republicans are in power is Trump. He is generally more popular than the congressmen and women in nearly every congressional district, despite some polls to the contrary. I give credit to Trump for being a Republican team player but I also feel it's time for the president to lead, with or without the support of Republican leaders in the House or in the Senate.
This country has been bogged down far too long with politicians who theoretically represent us, the voter, while lavishly representing themselves from gerrymandered districts. What America needs is exactly what Trump is offering: strong leadership. In other words, as Admiral David Farragut is quoted as saying in the battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead."
To "Make America Great Again" resonates with the voter because the voter is quite aware that we are wasting our country's legacy.
Let's take a quick snapshot: The national debt is approaching $20 trillion, millions of illegal immigrants overwhelming the country, health care costs totally out of control, manufacturing sector in dismal condition, living costs up, income down, infrastructure falling apart at the seams and judicial legislation from the bench. That's just a quick snapshot, the list seems endless.
For the first time in a long time, this country has a chance to get back on the right track. We talk about "entitlements?" Like a "free lunch," there is no such thing as "entitlements." Other than we are entitled to help "Make America Great Again."
Wake up, America. Together, with the strong presidential leadership we have, and by us, the voters, neutralizing obstructing, self-serving politicians, this country has its best opportunity in decades to establish a foundation for a bright future.
