Another tool to fight human trafficking

Law enforcement offices across the state, both on their own behalf and as part of larger task forces, have been battling human trafficking in Ohio for years. On Monday, state Attorney General Dave Yost announced a new tool that will let the rest of us better support that effort.

A non-emergency hotline, 844-END-OHHT (844-363-6448), will send tips about suspected sex and labor trafficking directly to law enforcement personnel with experience investigating such allegations. Those who suspect such activity should not hesitate to use the hotline.

“The hotline is a much-needed tool in the fight against human trafficking,” Yost said. “Every phone call could be a lifeline to someone needing help.”

Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation criminal intelligence analysts will be assessing the information they receive and referring cases to local law enforcement, the human trafficking task forces and the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission and/or the BCI Special Victims Unit.

“Having a locally operated, round-the-clock resource means providing critical tips to law enforcement in real time,” Yost said. “It means our officers and task forces have a better shot at rescuing victims and bringing traffickers to justice.”

Imagine knowing that and hesitating to report a suspicion. That hesitation could mean the difference between captivity and freedom — maybe even life or death — for a person just waiting for someone to notice their plight.

Should you see a person in a situation that raises your suspicions, don’t wait a moment to take advantage of the new hotline. You may be the only hope someone has.
