Don’t be an at-risk driver, don’t become a statistic

2 min read

Most people understand what at-risk drivers -- those intoxicated from alcohol or drugs or distracted by hand-held devices -- pose to the those driving along innocently, responsibly and intently aware of surroundings who, nevertheless, gets creamed by a drunk, buzzed or distracted driver.

For a quick yet impactful read, visit the Ohio State Highway Patrol's site (https://statepatrol.ohio.gov/). So far statewide, the OSHP registered 9,723 OVI enforcements, 39,832 seat belt violations -- why anyone would not use a seat belt is way, way beyond us -- 18,004 distracted driving violations and 1,792 drug violations.

Considering a four-day holiday weekend began yesterday, those numbers will likely get resoundingly higher. Some will get nailed for alcohol or drugs. Some for moving violations like speeding. Some for distracted driving -- and let's face it, we all have done or do it. Some will get it for non-use of safety belts.

Some folks will get injured. Some will likely die. The stats backs that up from previous holiday weekends. Do not become a statistic.

Using a seat belt or, if a biker, a safety helmet may be something you should remember the next time you decide to go for a ride. The price you pay for that "freedom" you feel because you are not restrained -- or maybe being too plain absent-minded to use a seat belt -- might end costing you more than a non-seat belt use citation. It could cost you your life or that of a loved one. Think about that each day.

Think about that throughout this long Labor Day weekend. Don't let a citation spoil it. Don't let a tragedy ruin it. Driving sober and distraction-free while buckled up should be a given for any of us getting behind a wheel. Drivers coming the other way will certainly appreciate your doing that.

Motorists are encouraged to dial #677 -- of course, after pulling to the side of the road to make the call -- to report impaired drivers and drug activity to the OSHP. That will connect you to your local post. The officers will appreciate your proactivism.

Starting at /week.
