Though it seems as though we just had an election in Ohio, another one is rapidly approaching. In fact, the deadline for Ohio residents to register to vote or update their registration is Tuesday.
It's an off-year election, but this is another significant one -- there are two constitutional amendments on the ballot, in addition to important school, municipal and county races and decisions to make on a variety of levies and local issues.
It is important eligible Ohioans check their registration -- and then vote. Early voting starts Wednesday and lasts through Nov. 5. Absentee ballots must be requested by Oct. 31, and must be received by the boards of election by close of polls on Nov. 7.
Remember, voters are required to have a government-issued ID with them when they go to the polls: an Ohio driver's license, a U.S. passport, a state ID, or a military ID. And if it's been a while since you voted, be sure to check your polling location.
In many ways, the decisions that will be made Nov. 7 will have far more impact on our daily lives than the ones to be made a year from now. When a community is deciding whether it will renew a foster care levy or allow liquor to be sold in a particular store, who will represent them on boards of education or city councils, or who will lead them as mayor, it is important the vote be truly representative of the community as a whole.
That happens when eligible voters register and vote -- when they fulfill their civic responsibility. But time for registration is running short. Don't miss the chance to make your voice heard; and to join the voices of those in your community who will be making some big decisions on Election Day.
