Large turnout is essential for Aug. 8 special election

2 min read

With early voting under way ahead of the Aug. 8 special election to decide Ohio Issue 1, significant voter turnout will be essential to ensuring such an important decision is not made for all of us by a tiny percentage of voters.

Changes to polling places in many counties may be a deterrent for some. But county boards of elections have done their best to send out postcards and other reminders to voters of the new location for some polling places. Check your mail, or, call your local board of election to be certain you know where to vote.

No matter whether you support or oppose Ohio Issue 1 (which would raise the requirement for initiating and passing an amendment to the state constitution to 60% support, rather than the current simple majority of 50% plus 1) your participation in this special election is important.

Time and again we have seen elections decided by very slim margins, and by relatively few voters. Your vote matters; and it matters that enough of us head to our polling places that we are certain the results are representative of the will of Ohioans.

Plan ahead to make that happen, folks. Be informed not only about Issue 1, but about where and when you are able to cast your ballot.
