LISBON -- Melvin G. "Jake" Welling, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026 at Covington Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation following a recent illness.
Jake was born Jan. 23, 1937 in Lisbon, Ohio; a son of the late Melvin G. and Anna F. (Davner) Welling.
A graduate of Fairfield High School, Jake worked as a union sheet metal worker with Union #33 out of Youngstown.
Jake was a member of St. George Catholic Church, a member of the Lisbon Eagles, the Lisbon Grange, and loved traveling and camping. He and his wife, Janice also both worked at Disney World for several years.
Jake also proudly served as a member of the United States Army during peacetime in Italy.
His wife, Janice L. (Smith) Welling, whom he married on Oct. 14, 1961, preceded him in death Sept. 5, 2022.
He is survived and will be dearly missed by his sons, Richard (Wanda) Welling of Canton, Texas and Steve (Dafna) Welling of Columbiana; sisters, Margaret (Willie) Howard of Columbiana and Marie (the late Robert) Cox of Lisbon; brother, Richard Welling of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Jennifer Welling, Forest (Cara) Welling, Justine Welling, and Grant Welling and Janel (Josh) Dickey; great-granddaughter, Vivian Welling; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026 at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home with Father James Lang officiating. Burial with full military honors rendered by the Salem Honor Guard will follow at the Lisbon Cemetery.
The family will receive family and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
