NEGLEY, Ohio - Ellis E. "Fuzz" Towery, 86, of Negley, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring, Ohio.
Ellis "Fuzz" Towery was born at home in Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky, on Dec. 12, 1939, the son of the late Elvin and Viola (Andrews) Towery.
Fuzz proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army with Battery C, 321st Artillery, where he also served as a Paratrooper. Following his military service, he worked as a boilermaker for Pittsburgh Des Moines, traveling throughout the United States with his crew building water towers, some reaching heights of 350 feet.
Fuzz was a proud lifetime member of American Legion Post 290 in Columbiana, Ohio, where he served as Adjutant for several years. He faithfully volunteered his time every Friday to help with the Legion's Fish Fry and enjoyed not only being part of the many events, but also the friendships and camaraderie he shared with his fellow members. He was also a member of the Lake Tomahawk Sportsman's Club and enjoyed participating in the many events held at the lake. In his later years, Fuzz found peace in the simple pleasures of life at Lake Tomahawk. He enjoyed his daily walks around the lake, always taking the time to say hello and visit with his neighbors. He loved a good old Western movie and was an avid reader of military history, with the Civil War being among his favorite subjects. During retirement, he and his beloved wife, Lorraine, purchased a camper and set out to explore the beauty and wonder of the American West, creating many treasured memories along the way. Above all else, Fuzz cherished the time he spent with his family. The moments shared together, whether big or small, meant the most to him and will remain treasured memories for those who loved him.
Preceding Ellis in death were his son, Jonny E. Towery; daughter, Lynn Haldiman; grandson, Kyle Maite; brother, Vernon "Lefty" Towery; and an infant sister.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 59 years, Lorraine (Dayton) Towery, whom he married on Dec. 17, 1966; two daughters, Lisa Mitchell and her husband, Andrew, and Kimberly Tolin and her fiance, Bob Rich; seven grandchildren, Jason Rowland, Keri Tasker, Caitlin Tasker, Kylie Shortt, Michael Haldiman, Jenny Santana, and Matthew Haldiman; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his sister, Claudena Travis; two brothers, Samuel W. Towery and his wife Penny and Hinkle "Buddy" Towery; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday at Dawson Funeral Home from 1 to 5 p.m. Evangelist Rico Brown will conduct a funeral service at 5 p.m. at the funeral home, where American Legion Post 290 will conduct military honors in recognition of Fuzz's service to his country. Cremation will follow, and he will be laid to rest at a later date at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Dawson Family Center for a time of fellowship and remembrance.
