George A. Peterson

1938-2026

EAST PALESTINE — George A. Peterson, 88, passed away July 7, 2026, at his home with family by his side.

He was born March 3, 1938, in Greensburg, Pa., son of the late Durward and Dorothy Griffith Peterson.

George was a 1956 graduate of East Palestine High School and a longtime member of the Centenary United Methodist Church. He was a dedicated employee of Prudential, where he served as a salesman for insurance and investments for 30 years before retiring.

George was very active in his community throughout the years. Prior to his time at Prudential, he was a volunteer fireman for East Palestine. In 1984 he was one of three individuals who helped start the county’s first all weather track at the East Palestine High School. He was a devoted member of the Boosters Club for over 20 years and could always be found helping at the concession stands. George previously served on the East Palestine Park Board and was also a member of the Concerned Citizens Group, where he played a key role in raising funds for school sports and bus transportation when the levy failed in 1985. He also coached Pony League baseball and served as a Cub Scout leader throughout the years. One of George’s proudest honors came in 1985 when he was named Citizen of the Year.

A lifelong Bulldog fan and passionate supporter of Cleveland sports, George’s enthusiasm for his hometown and favorite teams was evident to anyone who knew him. He found great joy in the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, water skiing, maintaining ponds, and gardening. George took great pride in his yard, which was awarded Yard of the Month by the E.P. Town and Country Garden Club in June 2021. Above all, he cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. George never missed an opportunity to socialize with friends, both old and new.

George’s legacy of generosity and love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nancy (Carlson) Peterson; three sons, Mike Peterson, Matt (Tracy) Peterson and Tim Peterson; a daughter, Kathy (David) Cheurco; eight grandchildren, Lauren, Luke, Landon, Chelsea (Puff), Zach (Marissa), Ashley, Brock, and Morgan; and nine great-grandchildren, Jack, Colton, Kaiah, Ava, Aza, Auni, Ledger, Skylar, and Hadley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Daniel and Jeffrey Peterson; granddaughter, Jenna Peterson; a brother, John; and four sisters, June, Twila, Jean and Wanda.

Following George’s wishes, no services will be planned. He will be buried privately at Glenview cemetery, alongside his sons and granddaughter.
