Emery ‘Sonny’ Coon

EAST PALESTINE — Emery “Sonny” Coon, 91, passed away June 22, 2026, at the Christian House Assisted Living in East Palestine.
He was born Feb. 6, 1935, in Shawnee, Ohio, son of the late Hershel and Anna (Kopis) Coon.
Sonny was a graduate of Darlington High School and then was drafted into the US Army, where he served in Alaska as an infantryman. He worked for 33 years for B&W Steel as an ultrasound tech prior to his retirement. Sonny also worked at Brittain Motors in East Palestine as an assistant service manager and a delivery driver for a number of years.
He also served as an auxiliary police officer and EMT/firefighter for East Palestine and a funeral associate for Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home for a number of years. Emery was a member of the East Palestine Country Club and played on two golf leagues and had many fond memories of his annual golf trip with his friends to Myrtle Beach. He was an avid hunter and always looked forward to his annual thanksgiving hunting trip with family.
Sonny is survived by a son, Tim (Julie Lenihan) Coon of Columbus; daughter, Lori (Warren) Wilkinson of Hartville; three grandchildren, Katie (Ryan) Stephen and Ian and Sam Wilkinson; three sisters, Elaine Cramer, Darlene (Tim) Weigel, Evelyn (Ron) Clark; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Sandy Coon in 2023; two brothers, Ed and George Coon; a sister, Marilyn Mances; nephew Ty Coon; and a granddaughter in infancy, Ashley Wilkinson.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening. The family will receive friends prior to services from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine.
