Matthias E. ‘Buddy’ Schach

COLUMBIANA – Matthias E. “Buddy” Schach passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 24, 2026, at his home in Columbiana.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and graduated from Penn State University with a degree in horticulture. He then served in the Army, where he met his loving wife. They returned to Pittsburgh and started a greenhouse business as well as a family. Eventually they moved to Columbiana where they founded L & M Greenhouse. L & M stand for Lucy and Matt, but the joke was that it also meant Luck and Money.

He is preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Matthias “Buzz” Schach.

Matthias is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lucy; daughter Janine (Pete) McMahon; son Matthias A. Schach; sister Phyllis (James) Stafford; good friends Donald “Slim” and Kay Aeschbacher; and nieces and a nephew.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm St., Columbiana.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 180 Seventh St., Columbiana, celebrated by Father Chad Johnson.
