Margaret Kay Hirschman Hicks
1946-2026
Margaret Kay Hirschman Hicks of Pittsboro, North Carolina, died on Jan. 12, 2026, at the age of 79. Kay was born on July 10, 1946, in Marion, Ohio, the third of the four children born to Charles "Bud" Hirschman Sr. and Mary Gertrude Mullee Hirschman. After living in several towns in central and eastern Ohio, Kay's family settled in Lisbon, Ohio in 1959 and Kay graduated from David Anderson High School in Lisbon Ohio in 1964. She earned her BA from North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C. in 1992.
Kay married Jeffery T. Hicks on Dec. 7, 1973. In 1983, they settled on a small farm outside Pittsboro, N.C. Over her career, Kay held a variety of clerical and administrative support positions, but her real passions were art and animals of all kinds, especially horses.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Michael, and her husband, Jeffery Hicks (in 1999). Kay is survived by her brother, Charles Hirschman Jr (Josephine) and sister, Marcia Stanziale in Seattle, Washington. Also, in Seattle are Kay's nephew, Andrew C. Hirschman (Jennifer), three grandnephews, (Charles A., Coleman J., Judah E. Hirschman), and grandniece Josephine M. Hirschman. Also surviving are Kay's niece, Sarah Hirschman of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; nephew, Alan J. Hirschman of Kissimmee, Fla.; and nephew Brian M. Hirschman of Eagan, Minn.
Services will be held at graveside on March 25, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St Mary's Cemetery, 621 Delaware Ave., Marion, Ohio, at 11 a.m.
