James W. Dickens

1947-2026

SALEM — James W. Dickens, 78, passed away on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2026, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by family.

Born on July 24, 1947, in Salem, Ohio, he was the son of the late Glenn C. and Elizabeth L. (Shaffer) Dickens. A graduate of Columbiana High School, Class of 1965, Jim continued his education at Mt. Union College. His academic pursuits, however, were put on hold as he bravely answered the call of duty, enlisting in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Jim served his country with distinction as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 404th Radio Research Detachment, an Army Security Agency unit specializing in signals intelligence. For his valor and service, he received numerous accolades, including the National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Ribbon with a Silver Star, and three Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters.

Upon his honorable discharge in 1970, Jim returned to his Ohio roots and dedicated the majority of his professional career as a customer specialist with Ohio Edison/FirstEnergy, retiring after 30 years of service.

Jim’s patriotism extended far beyond his military service. He was a passionate supporter of veterans’ organizations, holding life memberships at the Washingtonville VFW Post 5532 and the Salem AMVETS Post 45, in addition to memberships at the Leetonia American Legion Post 131 and the DAV. His leadership was evident in his roles with the VFW as Post Commander ’74-’75, District 6 Commander ’86-’87, and State Commander ’99-’00.

Jim was also a faithful member and attendee at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Leetonia.

At the heart of Jim’s world was his family. A loving husband, devoted father, and doting grandfather, Jim took great pride in caring for his family and being present for all things big and small. He never missed a moment to support his son’s activities growing up and coaching his baseball team. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his three granddaughters, who affectionately called him “Poppa.” Jim’s role as a grandfather was marked by the same loving support, never missing an opportunity to cheer his girls on and be their biggest fan. Many cherished family memories were made at summer picnics, always complete with a spirited family wiffle ball game, and special grandparent/granddaughters beach vacations.

Jim’s legacy is one of love, laughter, generosity, and service to his country. His easy-going nature and sense of humor endeared him to all, and he will be lovingly remembered and missed by many.

Jim leaves to carry on his memory his wife of 48 years, Nola Trevor; son, Ryan and his wife, Michelle; granddaughters, Carlie, Jamison, and Rylie, the lights of his life; sister, Sue Quinlan; brothers, Gary Dickens, and Steve (Deena) Dickens.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at Washingtonville VFW Post 5532, 575 S. County Road, Washingtonville, OH 44490.
