Mary Lee Vandevander
Mary Lee Vandevander, daughter of Mary and Wilbur Mosser, passed in her sleep at home in Charles Town, W.Va., on the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025, this afternoon. She joins her husband, Stephen Ray Vandevander, who predeceased her.
She is survived by sons Stephen and Joseph Vandevander, and her granddaughter Chloe Vandevander.
Mary Lee was a native of Chester, W.Va., humanitarian, environmental, and social activist who was arrested twice during peaceful protests for causes that she championed, once refusing to pay the nominal bail, and making the three days in jail part of her action. She gave lavishly of money, her time, and labor to support charities for the elderly, the impoverished, and victims of natural disasters. She was a long-time supporter of the ACLU and political action organization committees.
She was a teacher by profession, and graced the lives and improved the minds and characters of generations of children. She was also a loving and devoted parent and grandparent.
She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was blessed with a devoted group of friends both within and outside her church communities.
Her life was honored in a small memorial service of close family and friends.
May God rest her sweet soul, and reunite her with her husband, parents, and all the dearly departed.
