EAST PALESTINE — James E. Stanyard IV, 78, passed away Dec. 19, 2025, at his home with family by his side.
James was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Sewickley, Pa., son of the late James Stanyard III and Jeanne Watts Stanyard.
James was a 1965 graduate of East Palestine High School and a proud veteran of the US Air Force, having served in Spain during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the American Legion and served as past commander of the East Palestine Post #31. He previously served on the East Palestine City Council and its Planning and Zoning Board. Later in life he worked at the East Palestine Schools in the maintenance department. He enjoyed fishing, especially at the coast of the Outer Banks, where he vacationed for many years. He was known as a trivia expert and loved collecting antiques and spending time with his family.
James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Laurel Johnston Stanyard; a son, Brian (Tara) Stanyard of Warren; a daughter, Brenna (Bob) Davis of East Palestine; brother, Bob Stanyard; eight grandchildren, Reed, Logan, Madeline, Taylor, JR, Chandler, Bailey and Maddock, as well as five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Paula Patterson.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine. The family will receive friends one hour prior from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
