John Carl ‘Jack’ Smith

1944-2025

John Carl “Jack” Smith, 81, of Salem, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, 2025, at Salem Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Aug. 19, 1944, at home in Salineville, Jack was a lifelong resident of the area and a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

On July 17, 1963, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Cynthia Ann Smith, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage built on love, loyalty, and laughter.

Jack was a devoted family man and is survived by his three children, Lisa (Brent) Fowler of Lykens, Pa., Randy (Mendy) Smith of Lisbon, and Luanne (Brad) Shaffer of Millersburg, Pa. He was a proud “Pap” to seven grandchildren, Jaci (Bill) Collier, Corey (Jessica) Smith, Ryan (Kelly) Fowler, Peyton (Brandon) Reed, Stephanie (Lyle) Lenker, Dylan Shaffer, and Morgan Shaffer, and an even prouder great-grandfather to 23 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his faithful companion, Riley the Schnauzer/Yorkie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rosemary (Higgins) Smith of Salineville; two sisters, Rose Pelley of Salineville and Donna Madison of Lisbon; and his constant companion, Mattie the Yorkie.

Jack worked as a high-lift operator at the Lordstown GM Plant for 30 years before retiring. He was an avid outdoorsman who found peace in nature. Whether he was fishing for walleye at Pymatuning Lake, camping with loved ones, or simply sitting around a fire sharing stories, Jack was happiest when he was with family and friends. He was a passionate Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan, rarely missing a game, and enjoyed golfing in several leagues through the years.

Jack gave generously of his time, always lending a helping hand to anyone in need, and loved to joke and tease those closest to him. His presence, humor, and deep love for his family leave behind a legacy that will live on through every life he touched.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home, 1014 E. State St., Salem. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, at St. Paul Catholic Church.
