George P. Begalla III

1946-2025

SALEM — George P. Begalla III, 78, beloved son, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his Salem home on Sept. 24, 2025.

Born in Salem on Nov. 15, 1946, George was a lifelong resident of the community he adored, and his passion for sports, dedication to service, and love for his family left an indelible mark upon the city he called home.

After graduating from Salem High School in 1964, George expanded his horizons to West Virginia University, where he proudly completed his degree in 1969. His time at the university was marked not just by academic achievement, but by an active involvement in athletics, playing both football and baseball with a competitive spirit that would define much of his life’s endeavors.

George’s love for sports seamlessly transitioned into a career, as he became an esteemed football and basketball coach for West Branch Local Schools, inspiring countless young athletes with his mentorship and guidance. His work passion equaled his devotion to his career as an independent insurance agent, where he distinguished himself with his integrity, work ethic, and genuine care for his clients.

A man of deep faith, George was a dedicated member of St. Paul Catholic Church. He exemplified the principles of community service and fellowship through his active participation in numerous clubs and organizations. George committed himself to acts of charity and support for his community. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he was working toward achieving the fourth-degree level. He also shared camaraderie with the members of the Salem Hose Club, Salem Elks Lodge, Salem Eagles, Salem Italian American Club, Lions Club, and the WVU Alumni Club.

George’s leisure time was often spent on the golf course, where he enjoyed the challenge of the game and the camaraderie of his fellow golfers. His love for sports continued to be a cornerstone of his life, immortalized in his induction into the Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Above all, George was a family man. Predeceased by his father, George P. Begalla Jr., and his sister, Pauletta Schaffer; and brother-in-law, Lars-Petter Sollie; he is survived by his cherished mother, Virginia (Oana) Begalla; his son, George P. (Katy) Begalla IV of Salem; his sisters, Mary Sollie of Norway, Alice (Harry) Bieling of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tammy (Ken) Greber of Sheffield Village, Ohio; his brother, Tom (Teresa) Begala of Sheffield Village, Ohio; and his beloved grandson, George “Sonny” P. Begalla V. Each of them will carry forward George’s enduring legacy with a trove of memories filled with laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love.
