Former Columbiana County Recorder Veronica E. Wolski, age 96, of West Point passed away peacefully on Saturday July 19, 2025 at Blossom Nursing & Rehab Center, Salem, Ohio with her sons David & Michael by her side.
Veronica was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1928 on the family farm near West Point, a daughter of the late Michael and Helena Anna (Kadlub) Barborak and had lived in West Point her entire life.
A 1946 graduate of David Anderson High School, Veronica’s first job was at the Soda Fountain at Morgan’s Drug Store, Lisbon. Following graduation, she began her young adult life in various positions, including a telephone switchboard operator for Ohio Bell in East Liverpool, opened & operated a small store from her home in West Point, and served as a cook for the former Elkton School. She also worked for a period of time as a Fire Spotter for the State Fire System, working from the Fire Tower located just south of West Point, which was at the highest elevation in the county.
In the early 1960’s Veronica began her career as a public servant when she was hired by Carl Stacy, former Columbiana County Clerk of Court, as a Deputy Clerk in the county court system, later promoted to Chief Deputy Clerk, serving all three courts from 1962 until 1975.
In 1975, Veronica was appointed Assignment Commissioner for the Court of Common Pleas, by Judge Richard D Kennedy and J Warren Bettis, Honorable Judges of the Court. In 1980, at the urging of both Judges, Veronica ran for the position of Columbiana County Recorder and won the election, beginning a 20-year career as the Recorder, retiring in 2000. She was the second woman to hold this position in its history.
Veronica was a life member of St Agatha’s Catholic Church (now Mission), West Point, where she taught catechism and sang in the choir. She was also a former member of the Lisbon Business and Professional Women’s Club, served on various boards, including the Metropolitan Housing Authority for 35 years, 20 0f which she served as Chairman, Columbiana County Mental Health Board, and the Public Relations Board of the U.S. Federal Prison in Elkton. She was also a member of the West Point Lions Club, SNPJ Lodge where she served as vice chairman, was active in the PTA and the PTO, served in various leadership roles with the Red Cross and the American Cancer society, and had also served on the Columbiana County AAA Board.
Her husband, Stanley John Wolski, whom she married May 24, 1947, preceded her in death on December 14, 1968. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Mike, John, Joe, George, Steve and Tom Barborak, sisters, Mary Helen Ross, Anna Tye, Helen Margaret Barborak and Pauline Barborak, and her infant son, Richard.
Veronica leaves to cherish her memory, her sons David (Linda) Wolski of West Point and Michael (Tina) Wolski of Hamilton, Michigan. She also leaves grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Wolski, Jason (Sunny) Wolski, Michelle (Kerry) O’Conner, and Brian (Annie) Wolski; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Carter, Bradley, Heavyn, Briar, Charlie, Alex, and Aiden, as well as great-great grandchild SaBria.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am, Friday, July 25, 2025 at St Agatha’s in West Point. The GPS address is 13507 Washington St, Lisbon, OH 44432 with Father Jim Lang officiating. Burial will follow at the Lisbon Cemetery.
The family will receive guests on Thursday, July 24, 2025 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home, 215 West Lincoln Way, Lisbon, OH.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers and in honor of Veronica being a 64-year cancer survivor, that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
