EAST PALESTINE -- James "Jim" E. McGinnis, 90, of East Palestine, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at his home.
He was born on Sept. 12, 1934, in North Lima, son of the late William Burdette and Mary Louise Gleydura McGinnis.
James had worked for General Motors, Lordstown and retired in 1994. He was a member of local truck and Volkswagen clubs and was known around town as the "Volkswagen Man." He loved motor vehicles of all kinds, he built and raced dune buggies, attended numerous car shows and competitions and did everything from building model cars to doing full size classic car remodels. After retiring James and his wife Barbara spent winters in Florida for 28 years. While in Florida, he helped repair countless people's homes and made endless friends and memories. James loved his family dearly and enjoyed the time he spent with them, especially with his beloved great granddaughter Kendyl.
James is survived by his wife of 71 years, Barbara Kuntz McGinnis, whom he married in 1954; a daughter, Vicki Yeaples of East Palestine; two grandsons, Daniel J (Carrie) McCowin and Curtis E. (Becky) McCowin and a cherished great-granddaughter, Kendyl Hope McCowin of East Palestine. Also surviving are two sisters, Carol (Dennis) Akerman of Manlius, N.Y., and Bettie Jane Petrila of Niles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Louise Weikert; and a brother, Leonard McGinnis.
A family gathering will be held at a later date.
