EAST PALESTINE -- Harry John Herbert, 88, of East Palestine, passed away Feb. 22, 2025, at his home in hospice care surrounded by family.
John was born March 2, 1936, the son of the late Harry F. and Mary Alice (Craik) Herbert of East Palestine. A 1954 graduate of East Palestine High School, John earned a Bachelor of Science from Baldwin Wallace University in 1958 and a Master of Science in Wildlife Biology from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
As a child, John loved to roam the woods and creeks around East Palestine and was an avid fly- fisherman. He turned his passion for the outdoors into a professional career working to develop and manage natural environments for wildlife. He and his wife spent 30 years in several countries in Africa and the Caribbean collecting animals for the Smithsonian Institution and doing research in national parks and private game reserves. Since retiring and returning home, John has been active in local environmental issues.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy "Dot" Herbert; son, John "Adam" Herbert; brother, Jerry F. Herbert; granddaughter, Alice Rose Herbert; niece, Jolene (Herbert) Strohecker and cousins, Becky Craik, Susie Craik, Charly Craik, Cindy (Craik) Gillis and Mary Jo (Craik) Gallo.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Holly Louise Herbert, and a sister, Marilyn (Herbert) Ryan.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
