1924-2025
LISBON –Jean Hurd Blocksom, 100, of Lisbon, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Crandell Medical Center following a recent illness.
Mrs. Blocksom was born on October 11, 1924 in Maplewood, NJ., the daughter of the late Ernest M. and Elaine M (VanFossen) Hurd.
She was raised at Thompson Hall in Lisbon, and in Youngstown and in Washington, DC. Jean attended the Holton Arms School for Girls in Washington, DC. and was a soloist for the National Cathedral in Washington, DC., and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1942, attended Oberlin College, in the Conservatory of Music, studying voice, piano and design. Later in life, she audited courses at Kent State and Youngstown State.
Mrs. Blocksom was a member of New Lisbon Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the choir and a soloist for many area events. She was a church Deacon from 2001-2007. Jean was past president and member of Salem Hospital Auxiliary, served as the Surgical waiting room receptionist, President of the Eastern Ohio Area Federated Music Club, Former President and member of Lisbon Music Study Club; former President and member of Gamma Nu Sorority; former Regent of Lewis Kinney chapter of DAR; current member and past secretary of Southwick Griscom Kinney Chapter of DAR; former President and member of Lisbon Garden Club; Outstanding Senior Volunteer for the Office on Aging; Office on Aging volunteer, clown, signing at nursing home; Robert Bycroft volunteer and Hot Air Balloon Launch Volunteer for CCESC, face painter, tutor, test monitor for CCCTC; Salem Community Theatre Volunteer, seamstress, costume designer and performer in Steel Magnolias, Sound of Music, Nunsense, My Fair Lady and others. She was a performer in Stage Left Players; former President and member of Coterie Club; a former member of Eastern Star; Card Club member with Elsie, Edna and Barb; worked for the Red Cross in Washington, DC; also worked as a sales clerk at a clothing store in New York City, Cleveland and Lisbon; worked as a clerk at Hillyer’s Bakery and deli; worked as a private home care aide for Lisbon and Salem residents; and taught private voice lessons in Lisbon. Jean was skilled in knitting, drawing, sewing, writing children’s stories and poetry. Her interests also included gardening, roses and lilies, she enjoyed antiques, reading and cooking.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her four children, William John (Carla) Blocksom of Lisbon, Elizabeth Jean “Betsy” Barringer of Lisbon, Thomas Robert (Darlene) Blocksom of Columbiana and Nancy Jane (Raymond) Geho of Columbiana; seven grandchildren, Cassie, Andy, and Taylor Blocksom, Brett Barringer, Matt and Michael Doyle, and Marshall Geho; step-grandchildren, Marty and Doug Dowd, Erik, Evan and Kyle Elrod; great grandchildren, Bryan Shure, Kennedy Knutson, Brooks and Rowan Barringer, and Caden Doyle; step-great grandchildren, Taylor Boaz and Jordan Dowd, Kaden and Zariah Elrod; three great great grandchildren, Lyla, Lincoln and Cooper Shure; two step-great great grandchildren, Mason and Nolan Boaz; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church, 111 East Chestnut Street, Lisbon, with Rev. Mark R. Wilds officiating. Private burial will follow at the Lisbon Cemetery.
The family will receive family and friends from 2pm to 4 p.m. and from 6p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the church.
