Robert ‘Bob’ Thorne
1939-2024
LISBON — Robert “Bob” Thorne, 85, passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2024 in the emergency room at Salem Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Thorne was born Feb. 5, 1939 in Highlandtown, Ohio, a son of the late Bruce and Margaret “Betty” (Loudon) Thorne.
A graduate of Lisbon David Anderson High School and the Youngstown Technological Institute, Bob was an accomplished and copyrighted programmer and in the IBM Solution Center. He had worked for the Youngstown Hospital system and had retired from the IT department at Kent State University in the early 2000s. He also farmed on the Thorne Family Farm.
Bob attended the Bethel Presbyterian Church, was a proud member of Gavers University and the Coffee Club, the Thursday Night Euchre Card Club, and he enjoyed going fishing, but most of all he treasured spending time with his family.
Mr. Thorne also proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Navy, serving during peacetime.
His wife, Jene Marie (Stelter) Thorne, whom he married July 8, 1967, preceded him in death Aug. 14, 2021. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bill Thorne, and sister, Sally Bell.
He is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughter, Jene (James) Bryant of Talking Rock, Ga.; son, Robert L. “Bob” (Sarah) Thorne of Ellijay, Ga.; siblings, Leatha (Michael) Benza of Richfield, Ohio, Kay (Richard) Gray of Columbus, Ohio, Frank “Chal” (the late Lyla) Thorne of Summitville, Ohio, Sue (Tom) Frericks of Fort Myers, Fla., and Walter “Bud” (Carol) Thorne of Carrollton, Ohio; grandchildren, Eleina, Hunter, and Brayden Bryant; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 16521 Steubenville Pike Road, Salineville, Ohio 43945 with Pastor Terri Swails officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Saturday.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
