SEBRING -- Mary Mercina, 97, passed away quietly Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024 at Copeland Oaks Senior Community, where she resided.
Ms. Mercina was born Aug. 3, 1927 in Salem, Ohio, a daughter of the late Thomas F. and Frances (Kogej) Mercina.
A native of West Point, Mary attended grammar school in West Point and after graduation from David Anderson High School in Lisbon, Ohio, she was employed by Homer Laughlin China Co. in Newell, West Virginia, as a decorator. During this period of employment, she supplemented her education by attending the Salem Trade Extension from which she graduated in 1957. The Lisbon Diesel and Supply Co employed her as head of its accounting office from 1958 through 1963. Ms. Mercina joined Farmers National Bank in 1963 and progressed through various phases of bookkeeping and accounting procedures. She played a significant role in the bank's conversion to accrual accounting and later the transition to a EDP system and was later promoted to the position of Assistant Comptroller.
Mary was a member of St. George's Catholic Church in Lisbon, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and served as treasurer of Slovenian Lodge 358 in West Point, Ohio. She also enjoyed playing golf.
Mary is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and other family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Frances Valentino, and by her brother, Thomas Mercina Jr.
A Funeral Mass will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 6, 2024 at St. George Catholic Church, 271 W. Chestnut St., Lisbon, with Rev. Stephen Wassie officiating. Burial will follow at the Lisbon Cemetery.
The family will receive family and friends from 11 until 11:45 a.m. Friday at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home.
