Cherie S. Holwick

Cherie S. Holwick, 79, passed away peacefully the evening of Jan. 9, 2024, in her home with family by her side. She was born May 14, 1945, in Lisbon, OH to the late Eugene and Bertha DeJane.

Cherie graduated with honors from David Anderson High School, Class of 1963, in Lisbon. She immediately began her employment at age 18 with McMillan Abstract Company in Lisbon. Over the course of 30 years, her knowledge, skills, and kindness made her a professional asset to the company.

Cherie married the love of her life, Ken Holwick, on Nov. 25, 1967. Ken has always said, “Cherie is the best thing that ever happened to me.” They were the perfect traveling companions as they journeyed through their lives together.

Anyone who knew Cherie admired her for her warm smile, gentle nature, compassion, generosity, and humor.

Cherie expressed herself through her love of baking and making candy. She was well known for her delicious chocolate covered cherries that were soaked in Amoretto Liqueur and shared with family and friends. Cherie also loved country music and enjoyed meeting so many country music entertainers through the years. But she was well known by Billy “Crash” Craddock for her wonderful homemade brownies.

Cherie maintained several special high school friendships over the years. She so enjoyed working with the class reunion committee to bring classmates together to share food, fellowship, and memories.

Cherie was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Cavaliers fan and enjoyed cheering her teams on to victory. She was also dedicated to her own physical fitness under the guidance of her husband, Ken, who was her professional trainer. He said she was a “toughie” and could hold her own with the best.

Cherie was a proud grandmother and was by her daughter’s side in the delivery room to witness the births of both of her grandchildren. She was the “light” in so many lives and her memory will be cherished by her family and friends.

Cherie is survived by her husband, Kenneth Earl Holwick of Salem; her daughter, Anna (Bob) Betz of Jamestown, Pa.; and grandchildren, Damien and Lia Betz, sisters-in-law and friends, Cathy Holwick Gagliardi of Canfield and Renee DeJane of Florida; and nieces and nephews, Jessica (Hector) Valle and Leonard (Kristen) Gagliardi, Lori (Dave) Kus, Debbie (Jeff) Thompson, Craig (Coleen) Glascott, Lori (Jim) DeJane-Gonnelly, along with many family and friends, especially Mary Davis and Shirley Hofer.

In addition to her parents, Cherie is preceded in death by her sister, Pam Glascott; her brother, Terry DeJane; her aunt, Verna Clagel; and her beloved Husky dogs, Chi, Chaz, and Kita, “the Boys.”

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Visiting Angels of Salem and Ohio Living Hospice of Canfield for their excellent care of Cherie preceding her death.

A private service was held at the Stark Memorial funeral home of Salem on Jan. 18, 2024, and Cherie was laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery in Salem.
