Oliver Wendell Gaskey

1935-2023

Oliver Wendell Gaskey, 88, of Virginia Beach passed away Nov. 26, 2023, after a brief illness.

Oliver is survived by his son Kevin Gaskey and daughter-in-law Carol Ann and grandchildren Ashley, Ryan (Britney), Cori, Erin, Michael and Gabrielle of Plano, Texas. Also surviving is daughter Pamela Taylor and grandchildren Brittany and Austin. Seven great-grandchildren survive, Oliver, Presley, Paxtynn, Jaxon (Ashley) Isabella, Estella, Ryan and Eli (Ryan\Britney) of Plano, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carole G. Gaskey, who passed away May 26, 2004, and his second wife, Ellen Gaskey, who passed away Aug. 16, 2023. His parents John and Dema Gaskey and sisters Mart, Carrie, Beverley and Braunda predeceased him.

Oliver was born May 15, 1935, in East Palestine, Ohio and was a 1953 graduate of East Palestine (Ohio) High School. He played the trumpet in the marching band and was the band president as a senior. He served two years in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1957. Oliver is a 1965 graduate of the University of Akron with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He had a 34-year career at the Babcock & Wilcox Company in Barberton, Ohio, retiring in 1996 as an accounting manager. Subsequently, he took a position as the controller at DHL Builders Supply in Wadsworth, Ohio until 2001. The Gaskeys had lived in Wadsworth, Ohio for 35 years. In 2002 Oliver and Carole retired to Virginia Beach.

Oliver loved to travel, enjoyed gardening, reading, sports and kibitzing with his neighbors. His eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren were all very special in his life. Oliver was a member of the Institute of Management Accountants, Hampton Roads Chapter. He also was a member of the United Methodist Church Virginia Beach where he performed various volunteer functions. In addition, Oliver was active in the West Neck Community Association where he served on various committees. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

A church service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2023 at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 212 19th St., Virginia Beach. Interment will take place at the Princess Anne Memorial Park, with a reception to follow the burial back at the church social hall.
