Charles V. Gorby Sr.

NEW WATERFORD — Charles V. Gorby Sr., 77, passed away Dec. 19, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman following a brief illness.

Charles was born Sept. 22, 1946, in Beaver Falls, Pa., son of the late Charles E. and Fern Peterson Gorby.

He was a longtime resident of New Waterford and worked as a crane operator for 27 years prior to his retirement. Charles was a Catholic by faith and was an avid Browns fan, even though they made him swear every game they played. He loved working in the yard and tending to his flowers and garden. He enjoyed watching the birds and sitting on his front porch drinking a beer and waving at the cars passing by. He enjoyed making people laugh and was quite a jokester. Charles was even known to make himself laugh and made those around him smile at his big belly laughs. He was most happy though around his grandchildren and his two great grandchildren.

Charles is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances Gorby; four children, Charles Jr. (Karen) Gorby of East Palestine, Lisa (Craig) Schumacher of Austintown, Jason (Rae Ann) Gorby of New Waterford and Melissa (Bruce) Halverstadt of New Waterford; a sister, Carol “Mic” Crawford of Columbiana; eight grandchildren, Dillon, CJ, Andy, Delaney, Anna Mae, Bryce and Mason as well as two great-grandchildren, Mia and Lillian.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Paul Gorby; three sisters, Virginia Haldiman, Janet Dickey and Sandra Pedro as well as his grandson, Dustin Gorby.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine. A burial will follow at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens in New Waterford. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
