EAST PALESTINE -- Our beloved Margo Elayne Zuch "Nanny" was called home after a long and brave battle with vascular dementia on October 30th, 2023 at age 85 surrounded by family and the incredible, caring staff at The Christian House. A compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she never gave up hope and never stopped fighting, even until the very end. Her family is grateful for how long she was able to hold on, and the memories that they were able to share because of her courage and strength.
Margo was born June 17th, 1938, in East Palestine, Ohio, the daughter of Byron (Bud) and Francis Louise (Moore) Cope and was a lifelong area resident, graduating from East Palestine High School in 1956. In town, you could come across her contagious personality while she was walking, picking up books at the library, or buying a maple donut. She was most proud of taking care of her family, being a stay at home mom to her children and grandchildren. Her most treasured moments were spent with her family. Her unwavering love, laugh, delicious food, determination, and wit will be greatly missed by all.
Margo also had many accomplishments that will have a lasting impact on her family, community, and town. The most notable is becoming the first female mayor of the Village of East Palestine, Ohio, serving her term from 2012-2018. Margo served in many roles on the City Council before becoming Mayor, shaping our town for the better. She served as Secretary of Pittsburgh Chair, Charter Member for the EP Fire Department Auxiliary, held numerous positions with the Historical Society, was Director of the EP Chamber of Commerce, and held a third degree black belt position.
Margo was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee Zuch whom she married on July 29th, 1956; her infant daughter Merry Lynne Zuch, her parents; two brothers Phillip "Dusty" Cope and Michael Cope. She is survived by her brother Deane Cope (Debbie), two children Robert Byron (Dawn Figley) Zuch and Laura Elisabeth Zuch-Battaglia; her six grandchildren, Chelsea Linn Hewitt (Jason), Robert L. Zuch "Robby", Jillian Elyse Zuch, Kristin Elisabeth Battaglia, Joseph Frank Battaglia, and Sawyer J. Zuch. Her six great-grandchildren, Layla, Grayson, Marshall, Ava, Owen, and Robby. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and life-long friends who will carry on her legacy.
A funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, November 12th, 2023 at Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine with calling hours from 1-2 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the Community Center in East Palestine City Park from 3-7 p.m.
A private burial will be held at Glenview Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband and daughter.
