Joleen Priscilla Ackerle Cattrell
1926-2023
HIGHLANDTOWN — Joleen Priscilla Ackerle Cattrell, 96, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on June 21, 2023, at the Hospice House in Poland. She was born in East Liverpool on August 22, 1926 to Wayne Louis Ackerle and Helen Jane Calhoun Ackerle. Graduating in 1944 from Wellsville, Joleen began working in high school at Sterling China and soon advanced to head decorator. She worked until her first daughter was born in 1957 and became a full-time mother and wife. Joleen married the love of her life, William “Bill” Cattrell in 1953. They built two homes from the ground up and also built the Chief Supreme Cream, the ice cream stand located on Clark and Aten Avenues in Wellsville, and operated the business for a few years before selling.
Joleen was a life-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wellsville where she developed a strong faith and became a devoted follower of Christ. Within the church, Joleen taught Sunday School for many years, directed Bible School, was a member of the Middlers’ Class, and could always be found in the kitchen at church functions. She helped with many church activities throughout the years including church auctions, spaghetti and Lenten dinners, hot dog and coat giveaways, and she was a Covenant Cookie Baker for the annual cookie sale.
Joleen always put others before herself taking care of multitudes of people throughout her life. She was known for providing meals and buying food for many friends and shut-ins, visiting rest homes, and providing large print Bibles for the vision-impaired. Joleen also loved animals. Every morning, rain, snow, or shine, she could be found feeding the birds and other wildlife including turkeys, raccoons, opossums, and deer. She and Bill loved to dance and travel and visited many countries in their 53 years of marriage. One of her favorite things to do raising her children and grandchildren was spending weekends boating, swimming, and water skiing (even on her 75th birthday) on the beautiful Ohio River.
Her children and grandchildren will cherish and share her memories. She was a loving mother to her children: Robin (John) Weeda and Jody (Rick) Lockhart of Highlandtown; and a wonderful “Nan” to her grandchildren: Emilee (Ed) Wilson and Alyssa Lockhart of Wellsville, Christopher (Renee) Weeda of Lisbon, and Zachary Lockhart of Pittsburgh. Joleen was especially thrilled to be an active part in the lives of her two great-grandchildren, Eddie and Emersyn Joleen Wilson.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Bill (2006), and half-brother, William Carr.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 25 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main St. in Wellsville.
A celebration of Joleen’s life will be held at the Roberts Funeral Home on Monday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Stanley of the church officiating.
Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Joleen loved participating in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Donations can be sent to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 401 18th Street, Wellsville, OH 43968.
