Homer Glendon Dotson

1930-2023

Homer Glendon Dotson was born to Lycurgus and Emma Lea (Yoder) Dotson, on December 23, 1930, near Salem, Ohio in the family home. He died on February 5, 2023, at the Blossom Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salem, Ohio, reaching the age of 92 years.

His early childhood and first school years were spent near his birthplace. At the age of 12, he and his family moved onto a farm in Leetonia, Ohio, where he spent the rest of his life. He received his formal education in Columbiana County, Ohio. He had a lifelong interest in learning, acquiring a familiarity with the German language. He loved people and would show and ask about their soul’s salvation.

Homer became aware of his need of a Savior in his late teens; after 4 years of searching, the Lord revealed to him that it was only by His grace that he could be saved. As he continued following the Lord, the Lord led him to the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. He was baptized on April 12, 1953 by Minister Harry Wenger, at Boyd School south of Berlin, Ohio. He was the third member baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in this part of Ohio. His sincerity was always appreciated and many remember his prayers in church as having a special connection with his Savior. He was faithful to the end.

He worked at a sawmill and also owned one. He accumulated an extensive knowledge of trees and could usually identify the wood by looking at the grain. Homer did slate roofing, spouting installation and repair, and was sometimes hired to knock down old silos. He enjoyed steam engines and antique tractors. Homer lived a frugal, economical, and simple lifestyle.

Homer’s dream of a home and family was never realized, but he touched the lives of countless children. His special signature on their Sunday School books, his little gifts of coins or pencils are a special memory. The annual fall hot dog roast at Homer’s was a highlight for the whole congregation, but especially the children, playing games in his yard and watching him operate his sawmill.

Left to cherish special memories are the Homeworth congregation and many friends and neighbors.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, two stepsisters, Marie Harris and Dorothy Harris and three stepbrothers, Franklin Harris, Paul Harris, and Richard William Harris.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 11th, in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite Church with Neil Yoder and Gary Miller officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
