Stephen E. Gorby

EAST PALESTINE — Stephen E. Gorby, 92, passed away January 8, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.

Stephen was born on March 4, 1930, in Salem, Ohio, son of the late Nelson and Verna Knight Gorby.

He was raised in Negley and was a lifetime resident of the area. Stephen worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Thompson Brothers Coal Company in New Springfield for many years. He was a member of the New Waterford and East Palestine Eagles since 1958 where he served as the post State Officer and State Vice-president for the Eagles and was inducted into the hall of fame in June 2012. Stephen was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and spending time with his dog Cody.

Stephen is survived by one son, Gary (Maggie) Gorby of Unity; three daughters, Eileen (Tom) Foley of East Palestine, Diana Jutte of Boardman, Patty (Mike) Best of Columbiana; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vera whom he married on January 20, 1951; a brother, Richard (Dick) Gorby; sisters, Eileen Gorby, Ruth Duwe, Vivian Arthur, and Lois (Polly) Felger.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with a private interment to follow in Clarkson Cemetery.
