Cora Belle Wilkes

CLARKSON — Cora Belle Wilkes, 94, passed away November 4, 2022, at the Hospice House in Poland.

She was born September 11, 1928, in Racoon Twp., Pa., daughter of the late Lester L. and Rosie Belle Green McElhaney.

She was a 1946 graduate of East Liverpool High School. During her high school years, Cora Belle worked at People’s Drug Store in East Liverpool and later managed the “Curb Service” in Calcutta, where she met her husband Henry Wilkes, Jr. After graduation Cora Belle worked as a bookkeeper for Faulk Brothers in West Virginia. After the birth of her first child, her career changed to homemaker and farmer. She loved to crochet, and many were recipients of her beautiful baby ensembles and Afghans.

Cora Belle and Chuck had many adventures in the lower 48 states in their RV after his retirement in 1982. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in East Palestine.

Cora Belle is survived by her children, Nancy Slates of New Port Richey, Fla., Nina (Norman) Rice of East Liverpool, LuAnn (Greg) Kimble and Perry (Donna) Wilkes both of Clarkson; four grandchildren, Michael Wilkes, Dustin Rice, Amanda (Curt) Alaksin and Sara (Donovan) Roessler as well as five great-grandchildren, Lexi and Dalton Wilkes, Demetri Rice, Fallon Roessler and Brooke Alaksin.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Henry “Chuck” Wilkes, Jr.; five sisters, Velma McElhaney, Ruth Whittington, Wanda McElhaney, Mary Lou Whittington, and Dorothy “Dolly” McElhaney as well as eight brothers, Floyd, John “Pickles”, Ross, Delmar, Dale, Ray, James and Richard McElhaney.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services from 5:00-6:00 p.m. A private burial will be held at Crest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Parkside Healthcare for the care provided during the last few years and to the Hospice House staff for their compassionate care during her last hours.
