Rebecca ‘Jean’ (Dickson) Freer
EAST PALESTINE — Mrs. Rebecca “Jean” (Dickson) Freer, 84, of Bye Road in East Palestine, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, Oct. 27, 2022, at Windsor House in Canfield, Ohio.
Jean (as she was known to all) was born June 30, 1938 in Rochester, Pa., a daughter of the late George and Rebecca Taggart Dickson, and had been a resident of East Palestine, Ohio, for nearly her entire life. Following graduation from East Palestine High School, she obtained a degree from Kent State University. Before retirement, Jean had long been the executive assistant for Henry Nemenz and his chain of food stores. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.
Jean was a lover of music, an accomplished pianist, organist, and soprano vocalist. But her passion was for family and friends. She was a light-hearted person, but even more so, a big-hearted person. All who knew her were blessed to witness a generosity and thoughtfulness that defined Jean Freer and knew no bounds.
Along with her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her son Mark Whitehead, husband Howard “Howdy” Freer, and sisters Duira McFarland and Shirley Simon. She is survived by her granddaughter, Farah Whitehead of East Palestine, Ohio, stepdaughter Tessa (Freer) Tanis, niece Sandra (Simon) Rose and nephews Dave Muransky and John Simon.
Calling hours will be held at on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine, Ohio. A private family memorial service will be held the following day.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Special Olympics.
