SALINEVILLE -- Bernard "Ben" Adam Jakubowski, 95, died peacefully at home Sunday, October 16, surrounded by his family.
A life-long resident of Salineville, he was born on August 20, 1927 at the family home, the son of Adam Roch and Stella Grace (Gruszecki) Jakubowski.
On October 2, 1963, he married Shirley Marie (Todd) Jakubowski. Their life together was never dull, and one of love, laughter and adventure.
For 95 years, he led a life full of honor, humor, compassion, understanding and strength.
Upon graduation from Salineville High School, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. He returned home on Halloween in 1947.
He started working at a young age on the family farm, and held several positions as a truck driver and as a machinist before working for Southern Local School District as a bus driver, mechanic and transportation supervisor, retiring in 1996. Area farmers counted on him in the summer for custom combining.
Dad was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as Post Commander of the Salineville John Adams Post 442 for 15 years and was a founding member of the Post's honor guard, serving as the group's first commander. He also was a past president of the Salineville-Southern Alumni Association.
Following his retirement, Dad especially loved meeting new people and seeing new places. He loved traveling to the oceans, the mountains, the big cities and the countryside. He was equally thrilled with swimming in the oceans, hiking in the national parks, catching a Broadway play and attending national events.
If the amount of love you received determined your length of life, Dad would have lived forever.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Bernard "Bernie" James (Sharon) of Minerva; three daughters, Sharon of Uniontown, Teresa of Arlington, Va., and Edna of Salem; two grandsons, Brian (Courtney) of Uniontown and Chad (Erika) of Minerva; granddaughter, Stefanie of Uniontown, with whom he shared a special bond from the moment she was born; three great-granddaughters; a sister, Mary (Roger); and a brother, Paul.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert E. Todd, whom he considered a true brother.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool with the Rev. Thomas E. Allmon officiating. A military burial service will take place in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Salineville with the American Legion Post 442 Honor Guard providing the honors.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family requests that masks be worn for the protection of all.
