SALEM -- Sarah "Sally" Jane Mattix, 90, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Salem Regional Medical Center. She was born September 14, 1931 in Toronto, daughter of the late Edward and Ruth (Snee) Hartford.
Sally was a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and went on to earn a degree from Ohio University in Athens and ultimately earning a Masters degree from Kent State University. She was Presbyterian by Faith.
Sally married the love of her life and soulmate of 64 years, Fred, whom she married March 22, 1958. She was blessed with two beautiful boys, Rick and Bill. She was a grandmother to Derick and Hannah, Dominique, Nicholas and a great-grandmother to Jayce and Sabastian.
Sally and Fred resided in Lisbon and ultimately settled in Salem where she taught at Reilly Elementary School for 30-plus years, inspiring many a young child to achieve great things. Upon retirement, she and Fred traveled and settled in "boringly beautiful" Naples, Florida during the winter months.
True to her nature, she remained active, volunteering for the Salem Historical Society and participating in many civic activities. Sally was an avid reader and could read an entire novel in a day. True to her competitive nature, she played football for her college sorority Chi Omega. Sally excelled at tennis, winning the doubles championship during the Salem Jubilee. In her later years, after teaching her two boys the beloved game of golf, she then took it up herself.
To know Sally, was to love her. No moss ever gathered under her feet! She was vibrant, colorful and most importantly, full of Vim and Vigor. She was the inspiration to all who knew her. Luckily, many fond memories of her will remain always in our hearts, She was so loved. Heaven is lucky to have her.
Survivors include her husband Fred; sons, Rick (Susan) and Bill (Jessie); grandchildren, Derick, Hannah, Nicholas and Dominique and great-grandchildren, Jayce and Sebastian.
Besides her parents, a sister, Ruthie and brother, Eddie preceded her in death.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Salem Historical Society, 208 S. Broadway Ave., Salem, OH 44460.
No services will be held.
