East Palestine, Ohio – David T. MacKay, 72 of Howell Avenue, passed away at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2014 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease at the Masternick Memorial Health Care, New Middletown, where he had been a patient for the past few months.

Upon his death, Dave’s brain was donated to the University Hospital’s Brain Project for research. He had participated in clinical trails to advance research in Alzheimer’s disease.

Dave was born February 24, 1942 in Dover, a son of the late David H. and Jane E. Thomas MacKay and had resided in East Palestine since 1964.

He had received a Bachelor of Arts from Muskingum College and began his teaching career in East Palestine in 1964, and retired from here after forty years. He had continued his education after college, receiving a Masters in Vocational Education from Kent State, and additional Master Degrees from Westminster College in Principal Certification and Guidance Counseling.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church as well as the Knights of Columbus, of which he was a 3rd Degree. Other organizations had included the Jaycees, Kiwanis, Eagles and various teacher organizations on the local, state, and national levels.

Dave had been involved in athletics over the years, having played football and baseball in college, and while teaching, had served as a coach with the East Palestine Bulldogs football, basketball, golf and baseball programs. He later became involved with officiating football, basketball, and volleyball. He had a strong passion for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the East Palestine Bulldogs.

Dave was a person who dearly loved his entire family, and truly enjoyed teaching, and will be well remembered by those students that had him as a teacher and/or coach.

He is survived by his wife, the former Karol A. Freed, and would have celebrated their 47th anniversary on November 25th. He had insisted on being married on the 25th as it would be easy for him to remember the date, being one month before Christmas.

Dave also leaves two sons, David K. (Margaret) MacKay, East Palestine, and Grant W. (Kerissa) MacKay, Lakewood; and four grandchildren. Rowan, Kathryn, Abigail, and Conrad. He also leaves a brother, Thomas H. (Louise) MacKay, Bluffton, SC; and a niece, Katie MacKay. A second niece, Susan J. MacKay, had preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 24, 2014 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church with Rev. Christopher Cicero, serving as celebrant. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

His family would like to express their appreciation to both Masternick Memorial and their staff for their care and comfort during the last few months, and Drs. Charles Wilkins and Denise Bobovnyik.
