Sheriff’s Office
— Deputies responded to the 4100 block of North Street in Knox Township at 7:36 p.m. Tuesday to serve a protection order.
— A deputy and a Wellsville officer responded to the 1000 block of Township Line Road in Madison Township at 12:10 a.m. Monday for an unknown disturbance. Officers were advised by the caller that he and his girlfriend had an argument, and she had left with a friend before returning to the residence with several men, one of which assaulted him forcing him to escape into the woods. The caller advised that they then kicked the side of his vehicle before leaving toward state Route 45. The caller advised he was worried about his girlfriend but had her phone and had no way to contact her, and that he did not want to pursue charges, signing a refusal to prosecute. The deputy went to the residence of the girlfriend’s family to locate her but received no answer at the door.
— Deputies responded to the 4500 block of Bayard Road in Knox Township, at 9:28 p.m. Sunday for a reported domestic dispute. The caller advised the father of her children was intoxicated and arguing with her and said they were “going to play ‘Russian Roulette'” before allegedly loading and brandishing a revolver style firearm while there were three small children in the home. Following an investigation the man, John Tafe, was placed under arrest and charged with threats of domestic violence and transported to the Columbiana County Jail.
— A Washington Township woman requested a report on file that her neighbor keeps their dogs in cages outside for hours at a time without food or water and may be abusing them at 11:38 p.m. Saturday. The woman was advised to contact the Columbiana County Dog Warden.
Highway Patrol
— Michael Burrier, of Knox School Road in Homeworth, was cited at 7:32 p.m. Oct. 3 in Knox Township for a left of center violation, after his eastbound vehicle struck a westbound vehicle driven by Logan Crawford head-on before both vehicles went off the right side of road, hitting a guardrail and utility pole.
— Ragan Miller, of Southern Avenue in Columbiana, was cited at 2:15 p.m. Oct. 5 for failure to control after his eastbound vehicle traveled off the right side of Columbiana-Lisbon Road, struck an embankment and overturned.
— William Murphy, of Main Street in Hanoverton, was cited at 3:15 p.m. Oct. 3 in Center Township for failure to control, after his tractor-trailer traveled off the right side of U.S. Route 30, hitting traffic signs and a yard.
— Lori Nichols, of Walnut Street in Leetonia, was cited at 6:08 p.m. Oct. 6 for a stop sign violation, after she failed to yield from a stop sign at state Route 172 and Depot Road, striking a vehicle driven by Ryan Crabtree, of Massillon, in the left side.
— The post is investigating a two-vehicle hit-skip crash involving a combine at 3:48 p.m. Oct. 4 in Hanover Township. Bruce Marhefka, of Achor Road in Kensington was driving his vehicle northbound on Mechanicstown Road when he stopped and pulled partially off the right side of the road. A southbound green John Deere-brand combine (with an unidentified operator) traveled left of center and sideswiped his vehicle before fleeing the scene.
— Dominic Dotson, of Georgetown Street in Louisville, was cited at 2:30 a.m. Oct. 6 in Knox Township for failure to control, after his eastbound vehicle traveled off the southside of Georgetown Road, striking a culvert and utility pole.
— David Lipely, of Fairview Avenue in Salem, was cited at 9 a.m. Oct. 6 in Fairfield Township for a failure to yield violation, after he struck a southbound vehicle driven by Ken Bertolette, of West Main Street in Washingtonville, near the intersection of state Routes 164 and 558, forcing both vehicles off the left side of the road.
Goshen
— Officers responded to the 8800 block of West South Range Road at 2:50 p.m. Oct. 6 for a reported 911 open line. The caller who was later identified as Kenneth Meek advised it was accidental.
— Officers responded to the 10000 block of West Middletown Road at 3:23 a.m. Oct. 6, for a reported domestic dispute. The caller advised officers that she and the male half had been in a wedding reception and were drinking and got into a verbal argument before beginning to shove each other and the male half locked himself inside the residence. When the male half opened the front door officers observed him to have a small scratch on the left side of his face with some dried blood. The man advised that he did not want to press charges against his girlfriend and signed a medical refusal form, and the caller went into the residence to gather some essential items and decided to stay the night at their mother’s house.
— Deja Rizzo, 31, Canton, was cited for driving without a valid license and issued a verbal warning for speed after his eastbound vehicle on state Route 165 was observed traveling in excess of the speed limit at 3:07 a.m. Oct. 6.
— Officers responded to the 11000 block of West Western Reserve Road at 10:16 p.m. Oct. 5 for a report of several loose goats and horses in the roadway. Officers were met by a Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office deputy who had received the same call, and it was later determined that the owner of the animals lives on the county’s side of the roadway and the animals had gone northbound in that direction. Officers assisted until no longer needed.
— Officers responded to the area of state Route 45 at 5:28 a.m. Oct. 5, to assist Salem officers with a pursuit heading northbound. Officers checked the area to the department’s northern border but did not observe the vehicle in question, and subsequently checked the area to see if the vehicle had possibly crashed. Dispatch then notified officers that the Ohio State Highway Patrol had taken over the pursuit.
Salem
— Officers responded to the 1600 block of South Lincoln Avenue at 10:16 p.m. Sunday for a report of telecommunications harassment. The caller advised that his sister had been contacting him about his wife and he wanted officers to contact her and have her stop. Officers also advised the caller and his wife to stop all contact with her. Officers contacted the caller’s sister and advised her not to contact her brother anymore.
— Officers responded to the 2800 block of East State Street at 6:15 p.m. Sunday for a report of a suspected shop lifter. Asset protection advised a man was inside the store who had shoplifted multiple times. The man had left prior to officers’ arrival and no merchandise was taken, but the man had been previously trespassed from the store, and management wanted to pursue trespassing charges. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the man. A warrant for criminal trespass will be issued.
— Officers responded to the area of Centennial Park at 5:33 p.m. Sunday for juveniles jumping on the tables and a dog running at large observed by city cameras. Officers located the owner of the dog, who was also the guardian of several of the children, who were advised to stay off the tables. The man was advised of the city ordinance regarding dogs at large and given a verbal warning for dog at large.
— Officers responded to the 100 block of West State Street at 1:36 p.m. Sunday to identify two men that had just departed a business and were suspected to have been involved in shop-lifting merchandise from the business earlier this month and being the driver and passenger of a vehicle involved in committing several traffic offenses. Officers located the two individuals walking away from the business and initiated contact for a brief field interview, identifying both and reading them their Miranda Rights after which they were informed of the reason for officers having made contact with them. Both exercised their right to remain silent when asked if they wanted to make any statement in relation to their potential involvement. Both were advised that they would be contacted at a future time for follow up and the criminal charges may result pursuant to the investigation. Both advised they understood and departed without incident.
— Officers responded to the 200 block of West Sixteenth Street at 8:20 a.m. Sunday for a wellness check. Officers spoke with the individual who advised everything was fine, and officers advised them to contact their daughter.
— Officers responded to the 600 block of East Fourth Street at 2:46 a.m. Sunday for a report of an unknown issue. The caller was only able to ask for officers due to a language barrier. Officers spoke with the caller who advised when he returned home from work a man was inside the home and his wife attacked him. Officers spoke with the wife, and with the assistance of a translator learned that the caller Mateo Alonzo, Salem, came home from work drunk and began to argue with her, grabbing her by the hair and pulling her around the room. She then scratched his face. Alonzo was taken into custody for domestic violence and transported to the police department for processing prior to transport to the Columbiana County Jail.
— Officers responded to the 400 block of East Third Street at 8:25 p.m. Saturday for a reported suspicious person. The area was check and the man had already departed. The caller provided video showing the person and officers located him a few blocks away. He was advised of the complaint and the consequences of entering other peoples’ property.
— Officers responded to the 1000 block of Superior Avenue at 6:04 p.m. Saturday for a report of multiple vehicles peeling tires in the parking lot. Officers did not observe any vehicle driving recklessly.
— Officers responded to the 900 block of West State Street at 5:47 p.m. Saturday for to assist Columbiana officers with locating a vehicle that had allegedly struck a pedestrian. The suspected vehicle was possibly in Salem, and officers checked State Street and several locations but did not locate the vehicle. Information was passed on to the next shift to be on the lookout for the vehicle and to stop and hold the vehicle if located.
— Officers responded to the 600 block of Franklin Avenue at 5:49 p.m. Saturday for a report of an unattended child. Officers checked the area and located the child with adult supervision.
— Officers responded to the area of Franklin Avenue and Reilly Avenue at 5:26 p.m. Saturday for a wellness check on a woman lying in the roadway. Officers located a woman sitting in a puddle of water, who advised they wanted transported to the hospital. The fire department and EMT were called to the scene, and the woman was transported by EMT.
— Officers responded to the 300 block of Rose Avenue at 3:52 p.m. Saturday for a report of a woman who needed medical attention. Officers spoke with the woman who advised she thinks someone stuck her with a needle with unknown drugs in it. The woman wouldn’t say where she was at or who the person was. EMT transported the woman to the Salem Regional Medical Center.
— Officers responded to the 500 block of Continental Drive at 11:29 a.m. Saturday for a reported domestic dispute. The man left prior to officers’ arrival and ran into the woods behind the residence. Officers spoke with the caller who advised that the man was going through her personal belongings, and when she asked for her belongings back the man grabbed her by the throat and held her against the ground. Officers checked the woods behind the residence but could not locate the man.
— Officers on patrol in the 1900 block of East State Street at 12:54 a.m. Saturday initiated a traffic stop for a marked lanes violation. Officers made contact with the driver, Jose Pena, 75, Salem, advising him of the violation, and further investigation showed the license plate not to be registered to any vehicle. Pena was able to show a title for the vehicle but advised that the car had not been registered through the BMV and the plate does not belong to the vehicle. Pena was cited for fictitious plates and warned for a marked lanes violation.
— Officers responded to the 200 block of Brooklyn Avenue at 8:08 p.m. Friday for a report of people in the caller’s yard. It was found to just be kids playing hide and seek.
— Officers on patrol checked a property in the 600 block of West Seventh Street at 7:03 p.m. Friday for a report of a man with an active warrant out of the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office. Officers were unable to locate the man.
— Officers spoke to a person at the police department at 6:32 p.m. Friday for a report of a man walking in the 300 block of South Ellsworth Avenue consuming alcohol. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the man.
— Officers responded to the 200 block of West State Street at 3:04 p.m. Friday for a reported person to be removed. Officers spoke to all parties and were advised a customer attempted to return an item but were unable to do so due to a lack of a receipt. Officers were then advised the customer became upset refusing to leave the parking lot of the store. Officers’ criminal trespassed two people from the store and advised them if they came back, they could be arrested.
Perry Township
— Officers responded to the 700 block of Cunningham Road at 12:08 p.m. Sunday for a reported civil dispute. Officers advised the parties that the matter was civil and to contact attorneys.
— Officers responded to the 700 block of Bethel Drive at 4:18 a.m. Sunday for a reported house party. Officers checked the area and observed no signs of a party or people in the area.
— Officers responded to the 2300 block of Lexington Avenue at 11:40 a.m. Saturday to assist Salem Officers with a foot pursuit. Officers assisted until no longer needed.
— Officers responded to the 1200 block of North Lincoln Avenue at 10:32 a.m. Thursday to assist Ohio Edison in turning off the electricity to an apartment. Officers stood by while the electricity was shut off and locked out.
