Salem
–Officers responded to the area of South Lincoln Avenue and Aetna Street at 3:57 p.m. Thursday for a reported hit and skip. An unknown driver was travelling westbound on Aetna Street when their vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign, striking a vehicle driven north on South Lincoln Avenue by Gerald McKay, causing it to spin out in the roadway before fleeing the scene westbound on Aetna. Officers located the vehicle parked unoccupied behind a residence in an alleyway and were able to locate the owner of the vehicle advising them of the incident, who advised an unknown person must have stolen the vehicle.
–Officers responded to the 500 block of East School Street at 1:10 p.m. Thursday for a wellness check. Officers were unable to contact the resident.
–Officers responded to the area of Waterworth Memorial Park at 1:02 p.m. Thursday for a report of possible gunshots. Officers noted a roofing company in the 1200 block of North Ellsworth Avenue working using power nailers, which produced a sound similar to small caliber gun shots. The surrounding area was checked, and no other concerning noises were located.
–Officers responded to the 900 block of East State Street at 12:29 p.m. Thursday for a report of a drive-off. The caller advised that a black Chevy Trailblazer drove off after pumping $44 of gasoline, fleeing eastbound.
–Officers responded to the 400 block of West Second Street at 10:42 a.m. Thursday for a 911 hang-up call. Officers checked the area but did not locate the source of the call.
–Officers responded to the 500 block of Franklin Avenue at 8:59 p.m. Wednesday for a domestic dispute between two male juvenile siblings. Officers were advised that the two had been in a verbal altercation that resulted in one of the juveniles getting physical. The aggressor had grabbed the other by the neck then pushed him into a wall, causing a small cut to the inner lip. The juvenile in question was taken into custody and transported to the Louis Tobin Detention Center.
–Officers responded to the 900 block of South Union Avenue at 3:32 p.m. Wednesday for a report of an unruly juvenile who had indicated an intent of self-harm. Officers spoke with the juvenile and affirmed the intent of self-harm, as well as observing hesitation marks from some sort of edged blade. First responded and EMT responded, and the juvenile was subsequently transported to Boardman for further treatment. Officers gathered information from the custodian about ongoing issues and the information was forwarded for possible further investigation.
–Officers responded to the 300 block of Ash Avenue at 3:28 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a tree down in the roadway. Officers observed two branches on the curb lawn and the roadway was clear.
–Officers responded to the 500 block of Aetna Street at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday for a reported dog at large. The dog returned home and was placed inside, and officers issued the owner a warning for dog at large.
— Officers responded to Centennial Park at 10:09 p.m. Sunday for a report of a vehicle parked after hours. Officers spoke with the occupants and sent them on their way.
— Officers responded to the 100 block of West State Street at 6 p.m. Sunday to locate a person with a warrant. Officers located the woman in question, Cameron Yarwood, 45, Salem, and took her into custody, transporting her to the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office.
— Officers responded to the 600 block of Newgarden Avenue at 2:14 p.m. Sunday for an animal complaint. The caller advised a dog was outside and they were concerned for its safety due to the weather. Officers spoke with the owner who advised the dog goes in and out of the house and enjoys being outside but is brought back in frequently.
— Officers responded to the area of Park Avenue and Maple Street at 1:25 p.m. Sunday for an accident. Officers were advised that both vehicles had left the scene but there was still debris in the roadway. Officers cleared the roadway and spoke to a witness who advised a vehicle had run the stop sign on Park Avenue.
— Officers responded to the area of East Pershing Street and South Lincoln Avenue at 1:06 p.m. Sunday for a report of a possibly malfunctioning traffic signal. Officers observed all traffic lights at the intersection go through multiple cycles with no issues.
— Officers responded to the 1100 block of Cleveland Street at 12:41 p.m. Sunday for an animal complaint. Officers were advised of a dog left out in the cold. Officers spoke with the owner, advising them of the complaint, and they advised they would bring the dog inside.
— Officers responded to the 800 block of Howard Avenue at 7:49 a.m. Sunday to assist the Salem Fire Department in investigating a report of a fire on the department Facebook page. Upon arrival it was determined that no fire had occurred, and the message was a hoax.
— Officers responded to the 300 block of Brooklyn Avenue at 7:25 a.m. Sunday for a wellness check. Officers spoke with a family member of the man who advised he had just left the residence for work and was fine.
— Officers responded to a business in the 2700 block of East State Street at 7:08 a.m. Sunday to assist employees with an issue they were having at the business. The fire department also responded to remedy the issue with the door of the business.
— Officers responded to the area of Washington Avenue and East State Street at 2:09 a.m. Sunday to assist highway patrol with a traffic stop.
— Officers responded to the 1200 block of East State Street at 1:38 a.m. Sunday for a report of a possible domestic. Officers spoke with both a man and woman who denied any sort of domestic. The man had some visible blood around his nose, however it was determined to be from a prior incident in the 500 block of South Broadway Avenue earlier in the evening.
— Officers responded to the 500 block of South Broadway Avenue at 11:03 p.m. Saturday for a report of an altercation with a man reported to have a firearm out and threatening people. When officers arrived the man, Sean Alvarez, New Waterford, who did have a handgun on his person was ordered to the ground, detained, searched, and placed into the patrol car for further investigation. The firearm was recovered with one round found in the chamber. During the investigation it was found a separate man had been intoxicated and belligerent to other customers and staff and was asked to pay his tab and leave, before threatening people and getting into a physical altercation with a bouncer outside. Alvarez, who was intoxicated, advised he had only retrieved his firearm from his vehicle for the protection of himself and his family and others, and the other man fled the scene on foot prior to officer’s arrival. Alvarez was placed under arrest for a misdemeanor charge of weapons while intoxicated and transported to the police department for processing and later transported to the Columbiana County Jail. Several people involved in the initial incident were instructed to respond to the police department to fill out written statements. Further investigation is pending.
— Officers responded to the 300 block of West Fifth Street at 9:57 p.m. Saturday for a man with an active warrant. Officers were unable to contact the man.
— Officers responded to the 700 block of West Wilson Street at 5:38 p.m. Saturday for a report of a female juvenile who had taken multiple melatonin. Officers spoke with the juvenile and the father, and the juvenile advised she has been depressed, and was transported to Akron Children’s by EMT.
— Officers responded to a business in the 900 block of East State Street at 4:50 p.m. Saturday for a reported drive off. The caller advised that about 45 minutes prior to their call a dark blue Impala drove away without paying for $25 worth of fuel. No further description nor direction of travel were provided.
— Officers responded to the 200 block of West Fifth Street at 2:52 p.m. Saturday for a report of a barking dog. Officers advised the owner of the complaint. No violations were observed.
— Officers responded to the 1900 block of East State Street at 7:49 a.m. Saturday for report of possible theft. The caller advised that sometime during the night he had lost his wallet which he did not go anywhere without it and that it may have been stolen. Officers advised that a report would be made. The caller advised that he would go back to the locations that he was at during the night to check if it had been turned in.
— Officers responded to the 1900 block of East State Street at 6:28 a.m. Saturday for a report of an upset person. Officers spoke with the person in question and advised them of the options for dealing with the situation.
— Officers responded to the 100 block of Brooklyn Avenue at 3:24 a.m. Saturday for a wellness check. The caller advised that there was a man outside rolling around in the street. Officers observed the man to have a large bump on his forehead, a bloody face, and was intoxicated. The man was asked if he fell or was assaulted, and he advised he wasn’t saying anything. The man was transported to the Salem Regional Medical Center by EMT.
— Officers responded to the 500 block of South Broadway Avenue at 2:34 a.m. Saturday for a report of an intoxicated person. The person was given a courtesy transport to the 2100 block of Monroe.
— Officers on patrol observed a vehicle without a working plate light in the 300 block of West State Street at 1:05 a.m. Saturday. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, speaking with the owner and receiving consent to search the vehicle. During the search officers located drug paraphernalia on the passenger side of the vehicle, and both the driver and passenger were detained. The passenger, Shane Knepper, 53, Salem, admitted the drug paraphernalia was his and was taken into custody. The driver was released with a verbal warning for the plate light, and officers transported Knepper to the police department for processing, and later to the Columbiana County Jail. Additional charges are pending BCI results.
