— An officer responded to the 400 block of East Washington Street at 1:27 p.m. Sept. 13 where a resident reported smelling burnt coffee coming from a neighbor’s home. The officer spoke with the resident in question and found everything to be fine.

— Police responded to the 700 block of East Lincoln Way at 11:40 a.m. Sept. 13 in reference to a suspicious vehicle and found the driver was the mother of the resident and wanted to speak with her. The resident said she was fine and did not want to speak with her mother. The mother was advised of the situation.

Salem

— Officers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Maple Street at 11:08 p.m. Thursday for a possible breaking and entering report. The caller thought she had heard someone at her door, and was unsure and thought her emotional support dog was barking at someone. Nobody was found at the lower apartment, with no signs of forced entry being observed.

— Officers responded to a business in the 800 block of West State Street at 9:21 p.m. Thursday for a wellness check. The caller stated a man smacked his juvenile son while in the business. Officers checked video surveillance and it showed the man discipline his child and nothing illegal.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Jefferson Avenue at 8:18 p.m. Thursday to check for a wanted person. Officers found the person had not lived there for some time and notified the entering agency.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Whinnery Road with the fire department at 7:22 p.m. Thursday for a medical call. The caller advised a juvenile at the residence cut her wrist. The juvenile was transported by KLG for medical attention

— A cell phone found at the dog park was turned in to the police department at 6:37 p.m. Thursday. The phone was placed into lost and found.

— Officers responded to the 600 block of West Sixth Street at 3:59 p.m. Thursday to speak to two solicitors, advising them of the city’s ordinances and that any further violations will result in a citation.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Fairview Avenue at 2:23 p.m. Thursday for a wellness check. Officers found everything was okay.

— Officers spoke to a juvenile woman at the police station and her guardian at 1:06 p.m. Thursday for a report of harassment from a woman she knew. The woman advised she was receiving unwanted text messages and officers advised them to cease all contact and they would attempt to instruct to other person the same thing.

— Officers responded to the 200 block of Hawley Avenue at 1:04 p.m. Thursday for a dog at large. The dog was obtained by officers and placed in the humane officer’s kennel. No owner was able to be identified.

— Officers responded to the 1200 block of Robin Avenue at 11:42 a.m. Thursday for a report of a suspicious vehicle. The caller advised an unknown vehicle had been parked in front of her house for approximately four days and has not moved. The owner was identified but contact could not be made. A 48-hour parking warning sticker was placed on the vehicle.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of Cleveland Street at 10:04 a.m. Thursday to assist the Salem Housing Department. Officers stood by until no longer needed.

— While on patrol in the area of South Broadway and Columbia at 9:35 a.m. Thursday officers observed a black Mazda commit a turn signal violation, and conducted a traffic stop. Officers discovered the driver only had a temporary instructor permit and did not have a licensed driver with them. The driver was issued a citation for permit violation and juvenile offender, and a driver with a valid license responded to obtain the vehicle.

— Officers responded to the 600 block of Euclid Avenue at 7:58 a.m. Thursday for a dog at large. The caller advised that they had secured a loose dog, but no owner was around. The officer transported and placed the dog at the human officer’s kennel until an owner can be located.

— Officers responded to a business in the 800 block of West State Street at 8:02 p.m. Wednesday for a possible dispute. A juvenile male had recently been terminated from his employment and the juvenile and his father then went to the business. When employees asked them to leave, a scene was caused. Officers advised them to leave for the evening and the manager attempted to contact the owner to possibly sign a trespass form.

— Officers responded to the 800 block of North Ellsworth Avenue at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday for a suspicious person. Officers located the person and advised him of the city’s ordinances on soliciting. He advised he understood.

— Officers responded to the 1000 block of East Ninth Street at 7:26 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a man soliciting. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the man.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 500 block of Aetna Street at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday for an animal complaint. The caller advised he believed a dog was abandoned inside the residence. Officers spoke with the resident, who advised the animal was fine and that he has been living there for approximately two months.

— Officers responded to the 1100 block of East State Street at 1:03 p.m. Wednesday for a two-vehicle accident. Brittany Chestnut and Kathleen Cartwright were traveling eastbound on East State Street when Chestnut failed to stop, striking the rear of Cartwright’s vehicle. Both units sustained minor damage and Chestnut was cited for assured clear distance ahead.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of East Sixth Street at 12:13 p.m. Wednesday to deliver a message. Officers learned the person no longer resides there.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Lincoln Avenue at 12:11 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a dog at large. When officers arrived, they were unable to locate the animal.

— Officers responded to a residence in the 600 block of East Sixth Street at 11:21 a.m. Wednesday for a wellness check. The caller advised the woman made concerning comments of possible self-harm. Officers spoke to the woman finding no issues.

— Officers responded to the 900 block of Homewood Avenue at 7:52 p.m. Wednesday for a report of criminal damaging. The caller advised the tires on a vehicle had been slashed. No information on the suspect was provided at the time of the incident.

— Michael Joseph Jarrett, 36, Southeast Boulevard, Salem, was charged with domestic violence after officers responded to his home at 7:37 a.m. Saturday where his wife reported returning home to find all her outside plants destroyed. She said she had been having issues with Jarrett and was afraid to go inside. Jarrett was eventually arrested on charges from a prior incident.

— Officers responded to the 2300 block of East State Street at 4:21 a.m. Saturday in reference to someone carrying bags from behind a business, possibly stealing items from the business’s drop off. Officers checked the area but were unable to find the person in question.

— Officers responded to the 400 block of East Perry Street at 12:44 a.m. Saturday where a resident reported a juvenile was making threats toward him. The resident was provided options for dealing with the situation.

— An officer responded to the 2800 block of East State Street at 12:29 a.m. Saturday to assist Sebring police with a missing person investigation. The officer checked the area but was unable to find the person or their vehicle.

— Officers responded to the area of Ohio Avenue and East Pershing Street at 10:15 p.m. Friday in reference to a possible fight. Officers found a juvenile in the area who said individuals in a black Jeep drove by and threw eggs, rocks and other items at him. Officers searched the area but were unable to find the vehicle in question.

— Officers responded to the 100 block of West Fourth Street at 10:09 p.m. Friday in reference to eggs being tossed into a residence through an open window by people in a vehicle.

— Officers responded to the area of Hawley Avenue and Cleveland Street at 8:59 p.m. Friday in reference to a domestic in progress but were unable to find anyone involved in a dispute.

— Officers responded to the 2200 block of East State Street at 6:04 p.m. Friday in reference to young children left in a car alone. Officers checked the parking lot but the vehicle left before they arrived.

— A West State Street resident reported at 3:24 p.m. Friday neighbor had mowed their lawn, blowing fresh cut grass clippings onto the side of her parked car. She said a previous report had been made and an officer was following up with the zoning department, but the officer handling the current call was unaware of the resolution on the matter. The area where the cars were parked appeared to be along a designated alley. The complainant was advised if there was damage to her vehicle, the neighbor would be responsible, but that it would be a civil matter, not criminal.

— Officers responded to the 100 block of West State Street at 2:51 p.m. Friday to assist the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force on a traffic stop. The male offender was taken into custody for arranging to meet a juvenile for sexual conduct and $155 plus a caramel cold coffee from Dunkin were seized.

— Ronald Sharrone, 22, Struthers, was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign following a two-vehicle crash at Cleveland Street and Highland Avenue at 10:38 a.m. Friday in which he was eastbound and failed to stop at the stop sign, pulling into the path of a northbound vehicle driven by Beth Ann Barnett, 53, Salem. No injuries were reported.

— An officer responded to a gas station in the 2800 block of East State Street at 9:49 a.m. Friday in reference to a man who pumped $45 in fuel and left without paying. The complainant confronted the driver after recognizing him from a prior incident and the driver fled in his vehicle in reckless manner east out of the city. The matter is under investigation.

— A woman reported on station at 9:28 a.m. Friday her husband, with whom she has been having problems, had made multiple threats to cause her physical harm and she no longer felt safe at home with him. She was provided with several resources to help her find housing. The matter is under investigation.

— An officer responded to a 1400 block Franklin Avenue business at 9:26 a.m. Friday in reference to a window that was broken overnight.

— Officers responded to the 2800 block of East State Street at 8:20 a.m. Friday in reference to an irate person outside a business. The person said he was upset because the business would not put tires on his vehicle. Employees said they wanted the person trespassed from the property.

St. Clair Township

— Police received a call on Sept.1 from a female stating that she received a hand written letter in her mailbox from another female threatening her about not returning belongings. The caller stated that she did have a crock pot and ladder belonging to the other female, but has told her multiple times to come and get them. Caller is now concerned what female may do. Police advised the caller that if she shows up to call them.

— A female arrived at the station on Sept. 1 reporting that her ex-fiance said he would come to her mother’s house and shoot up the place if the female took her children there. She states the ex-fiance is verbally and mentally abusive and that she is fearful he may become physical and follow through with his threats of shooting up her mother’s residence. The female is afraid of him and wants no contact with him.

— While on routine patrol on Sept. 2, an officer ran the plate on a vehicle and noticed the registered owner had no driver’s license. The plate was not to the vehicle and the temporary tag that was on the vehicle was expired. The officer then stopped the vehicle and cited the driver accordingly. The vehicle was then towed to Calcutta Towing.

— While on routine patrol on Sept. 2, officers observed numerous vehicles parked on the roadway near Dome Street. An officer contacted the owner and advised him to get all the vehicles moved off the road. Officer came back an hour later and only one vehicle had been moved. The officer then discovered more vehicles further down the street that were also on the road and neighbors immediately moved those. The officer went back to residence and called Calcutta Towing to remove a red trailer with a Ford truck on it which was parked in the roadway. The owner, Helmut Purvis, came out of the house and argued with the officer that he was trying to get it moved. The officer advised Purvis he was being cited for parking on the roadway and told him to keep all vehicles off the road from now on.

— A female on Sept. 2 came to the station to report that her brother has been harassing her by phone and she would like it documented.

— A detective was dispatched on Sept. 2 to the BP Station on state Route 170 for drug activity. A female hanging out of the driver side of her vehicle was reported. Upon arrival, the detective identified the subject and asked her what was going on and she stated she was just counting money then getting out of her vehicle to get gas. The detective then asked the female for consent to search her purse which she granted. While searching the purse the detective found a burnt pipe and Chor Boy, which is commonly used to smoke crack cocaine. The female, Amber Lynn Maraldo, 39, was placed under arrest for drug paraphernalia. Her vehicle was then towed by Calcutta Towing because BP employees advised they didn’t want the vehicle to stay on their lot. The female was transported back to the station for processing and charged with drug paraphernalia.

— While on routine patrol on Sept. 2, a detective was following a vehicle with no visible registration. A traffic stop was initiated. The detective told the driver the reason he stopped him and asked for his license, registration and insurance. The driver provided his license and said the registration had fallen out the back window. The detective then identified the passenger and had him hand the detective the registration so he could run the numbers. After running information on both drivers, dispatch reported there was an active warrant for the driver through East Liverpool Municipal Court and both the driver and passenger had suspended licenses. The detective also noted the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver, Eric McQueen, 31, was placed under arrest due to no license and active warrant. A probable cause search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of marijuana which the passenger said was his. The vehicle was towed by Calcutta Towing and the McQueen was transported back to the station for processing and issued a citation for traffic violations and then transported to the county jail on the active warrant.

— Officers were dispatched to East Liverpool Road Sept. 3 for a two-vehicle accident with injuries near Cannons Mill Road. The accident was a result of a vehicle being driven left of center and hitting an oncoming vehicle head-on. Officers detected an odor of alcohol on the driver who went left of center when they checked on him for a head injury which was bleeding. When questioned by officers on what happened the driver responded he couldn’t remember. Officers observed empty and full beer cans sitting on the roadway right outside the driver’s door of his vehicle and several empty beer cans throughout the vehicle. When asked if he had been drinking the driver stated he had a few beers before driving. The driver of the car that was hit told officers that as he was traveling south on East Liverpool Road, he observed headlights approaching him on the wrong side of the road. He also said that as the vehicle got close it went left of center again and struck him head-on before he had time to attempt to avoid the collision. Northstar arrived, treated both parties and transported the driver with the head injury to the hospital. The driver, Barry Lee Ours, 47, before being transported, was told that he was under arrest and that due to his physical condition he wasn’t going to have him do a sobriety test. The officer followed Northstar to the hospital where the driver was read forms and asked to submit to a chemical test, which he refused. He was issued citations.

— While on patrol on Sept. 4, an officer following behind a vehicle state Route 267 observed the driver of the vehicle fail to signal when making a left turn. The officer ran the plate on the vehicle, a Hyundai, and the plate came back registered to a Ford. The officer pulled the vehicle over and conducted a traffic stop near the township line. A background check revealed the driver was under two different license forfeitures in Jefferson and Harrison counties. The driver, David Lowe, was citied with the fictitious plates and the license forfeiture and the vehicle was towed by Calcutta Towing.

— On Sept. 4 officers stopped a female for expired tags. Upon inventory of the vehicle for the tow a baggy of suspected marijuana was found. The driver, Crystal Marie Wayner, 39, was cited accordingly.

— On Sept. 5 officers responded to Walmart at 16280 Dresden Ave. in response to a female shoplifter. Upon arrival, the officer met with a Walmart asset protection person who advised them that she observed the female pass all points of sale without rendering proper payment for 26 items totaling $129.76. The female, Rebecca Anne Albani, 30, was advised that she was under arrest and charged with petty theft, a first-degree misdemeanor. The officer then searched purse and found several baggies with residue and a blue small straw with white residue, which the female stated was crack. Officers also found a small Ruger firearm which was loaded and a small baggie which the female said was marijuana. She was transported to the police department where she was processed and transported to Columbiana County Jail .The suspected drugs will be sent to BCI for testing with charges pending after the results.

— Officers responded on Sept. 5 to a call from a Canon Mills Road property owner who stated that sometime between Aug. 27 and Sept. 5 someone dumped trash onto his property. The property owner stated that when he arrived at his property on Sept. 5, he observed two mattresses, three TVs and a patio umbrella. He stated he is in the process of putting a gate up to block the access road, but would like extra checks until the gate is completed.

— Officers responded on Sept. 5 to the Carriage Hill apartments for a welfare check on a female who may have taken some pills. When the officers arrived, they were met by the manager who after several minutes of knocking on the possible victim’s door allowed us to enter. Once inside officers found the female semi-conscious lying on her bed. It appeared as though she may have been drinking alcohol but no signs of pills lying around. She admitted to telling a person she was thinking about taking the pills, and she did admit to attempting to hang herself in her bathroom on tied panty hose. An ambulance was called and she was transported to City hospital for evaluation.

— Officers responded on Sept. 6, to Tim Hortons for a vehicle that struck another vehicle and left the scene. Officers arrived and were met by the caller who stated that there wasn’t much damage and only to the license plate holder, but an older gentleman driving an old beat up dark colored van with a very loud muffler backed into her while in the driveway of Hortons, striking her vehicle then leaving the scene. A description of the vehicle was given out over the radio and city units were able to stop a vehicle matching the description. The driver identified himself to the officers, he admitted to being at Hortons but only drove through. He did not know of striking the other vehicle. All information was gathered and he was sent on his way pending an investigation.

— An officer while on patrol on Sept. 7 on Dresden Avenue observed a vehicle being driven by a person he knew didn’t have a valid license. The officer conducted a traffic stop on state Route 11 on the north on-ramp. After approaching the vehicle and letting the driver know why he stopped him, he asked for his ID, registration and insurance. The driver was only able to produce ID and registration. The driver stated he knew he didn’t have a valid license, but he had just gotten the car fixed and was going to meet his brother. Officer asked dispatch to confirm warrants. One warrant was found through East Liverpool Municipal Court. The driver, Gary Dorsey, 60, was placed under arrest and transported back to the police department and the vehicle was towed by Calcutta Towing. The driver was then issued a citation for driving under suspension and transported to county jail on the active warrant.

— Officers on Sept. 10 were dispatched to Walmart for reports of an irate customer that needed to be removed from the store. Upon arrival, officers located the subject that was upset Walmart wouldn’t sell her a pair of pants that had been removed from the store. She was advised it wasn’t a police matter, but since she had already paid for her other items that she needed to leave the store. She was then escorted outside to the parking lot where she left.

— Officers were called to the hospital on Sept. 10 for an assault. Upon arrival officers met with a male and female who told the officer that another male entered the apartment and shoved the female and grab the male by the throat until he was unconscious. When the male came to, he had a large laceration on his hand. The female said she went screaming for help and the assailant left the residence. The officers collected statements from both the male and female who want to pursue criminal charges. The assailant, Robert A. Mercer, is being charged with felonious assault and domestic violence.

— Officers while on patrol on Pugh Road on Sept. 11 had a white pickup truck pulled up next to his car while flashing its lights. The officer stopped and spoke to a known male subject who stated that he found his girl with someone and that he had struck him and just needed me to go to the Coaches parking lot. The male then proceeded to the parking lot where he was met by another male and female. The female and male both said that there was an altercation by an ex-boyfriend, but neither party wanted to file any kind of charges. After obtaining the information and speaking to all parties involved the officer followed the female to her home to be sure nothing further occurred.
