Columbiana County ESC administrators complete threat assessment training

By KATIE WHITE 3 min read

LISBON -- Thirteen administrators have completed threat assessment training through the Columbiana County Educational Service Center (ESC).

ESC Director of Teaching and Learning Dennis Dunham told the ESC Board of Education in October that the 13 administrators completed CSTAG training, which stands for Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines.

According to minutes of the October board meeting, Dunham said teachers and support staff went through half day training earlier in the day prior to the board meeting, and a full day of training on Sept. 30.

"The training is centered around classifying threats and responding appropriately to the threats for all involved in respective districts," he said.

According to the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce, the training is made available by the Ohio Educational Service Center at no cost to schools through September 2028 and was created to meet Ohio law training requirements.

CSTAG is an evidenced-based model approved by Ohio School Safety Center.

Dunham said CSTAG consultants continue to be in districts and will provide support throughout the school year.

"They all have made a nice impact in their assigned districts," he said.

Dunham also said that Junior Class Business Advisory Council Students Representatives were selected and attended the CAVE training at the SOD Center in Salem.

"We are in the process of getting our representatives involved in Mentorship/Internship roles in the county," he said, according to the meeting minutes.

He went on to report that each district in the county also selected Project Inspire liaisons to work with Coordinator Jeremy Russell and Advanced Methods Innovation.

"The intent of the liaison is to communicate the many STEM related curriculum opportunities and projects available to all Project Inspire member schools. Many great NASA related projects with ready to use kits will be shared to districts," he said.
