School official: Beaver Local spending less per pupil than state average

LISBON -- The Beaver Local School District consistently spends less per pupil than the Ohio state average, District Superintendent Eric Lowe said this month.

Lowe was happy to share the information during the October Board of Education meeting, in which administrators and the board continued to highlight the district's success on the annual Report Card.

The Report Card results were released by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce in September.

Lowe said data from the state shows that for the 2025-26 school year, Beaver Local's per-pupil spending stands at $11,585, which is well below the state average of $13,082.

"Furthermore, the majority of district funds go directly into the classroom, with $7,770 per pupil dedicated to direct classroom instruction," he said.

Lowe was also pleased with the district's overall performance, which placed the district second in Columbiana County out of all of the public schools with a 4.5-star rating out of 5 stars.

"A breakdown of the district's 2026 report card data reveals high achievement across key components," Lowe said.

Those components included the performance index, in which the district placed in the top 70 percent statewide; and a five-star rating for Graduation Rate, and four stars each for Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, and College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness.

The district received three-stars in the Early Literacy Component.

"When benchmarked against the 20 most comparable school districts across Ohio--Beaver Local sits with several others at the top of the group with its 4.5-star overall rating," Lowe said.

In other matters during the meeting the board also heard about the high school's community service and leadership honors, which included the selection of Landon Wheatley as September's Community Service Student of the Month.

Wheatley contributed nearly 500 hours of volunteer service to local school and church organizations, the district said.

It was also announced that Brylee Curtis was chosen to represent Beaver Local on the Columbiana County Educational Service Center Business Advisory Council Student Panel where she will participate in leadership mentoring and bridge education with local business leaders.

High Schools students Sophia GIbson and Gavin Williams were also selected for Junior Leadership Columbiana County, where they will participate in monthly hands-on leadership development and business tours across the county.

Also, students Ava Nocella and Aubrey Stewart named to the Ohio Attorney General's Teen Ambassador Board, where they will advise the office on youth issues and learn about state government in Columbus.

The school district also stated that Student Abram Rettos will represent Beaver Local High School at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference at John Carroll University in June 2027.
