EAST PALESTINE -- A section of leaking roof at the East Palestine Elementary School Building is being repaired.

The Board of Education approved a contract with TEMA Roofing Services during the regular October meeting.

The cost of the work is $187,500.

According to the resolution approved by the board, the roof repair was considered an urgent necessity and as such the two-week bid advertisement was not required.

"An urgent necessity exists with respect to repairs to the sections of the Elementary Roof that have been a problem with leakage and flooding of the building that compliance with the relatively lengthy procedures prescribed by Section 3313.46 of the Revised Code will result in the building being unsafe in areas for the winter and spring seasons. Repairs need to be done while the weather is warm enough for the roof to be repaired," the resolution stated.

In other matters, the board also approved a two-year administrative contract for District Treasurer Rick Ellis, who will be employed on a retire-rehire basis; and a three-year administrative contract for high School Principal Dwayne Pavkovich.

Both new contracts take effect the 2027-28 school year.

The board also appointed high school senior Kennedy Andre as student board member; Tara McCain as substitute van driver; the resignation of Susan Wagner as middle school gifted advisor; and awarding several other supplemental contracts for student activity positions.

Furthermore, the board approved the high School Marching Band trip to Walt Disney World & Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 12-23, 2027; and the High School Science Club Trip to New York City in May 2027.

The next regular meeting was set for 6 p.m. Nov. 2.
