EAST LIVERPOOL -- It was anything but an ordinary Tuesday evening for students participating in the East Liverpool City Schools Brainery after-school enrichment program, as they traveled to Pittsburgh for a memorable literary experience featuring Jeff Kinney, the internationally acclaimed author of the bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

The students attended The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Fight or Flight Tour, an interactive stage production celebrating the release of Fight or Flight, the 21st installment in Kinney's globally popular children's book series.

The event combined literature, comedy, audience participation, and entertainment in a unique experience designed to engage young readers and celebrate the joy of storytelling.

Unlike a traditional author presentation, the Fight or Flight Tour featured a boxing-inspired stage show complete with humorous head-to-head challenges, audience participation, flying feathers, and plenty of the signature humor that has made the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise a favorite among young readers worldwide.

For East Liverpool's Brainery students, the evening offered an opportunity to connect with a celebrated children's author while experiencing firsthand how literature can extend beyond the pages of a book.

Bringing Literacy to Life Beyond the Classroom

The East Liverpool City Schools Brainery program focuses on providing meaningful enrichment opportunities that encourage academic exploration, creativity, critical thinking, and personal growth.

Experiences such as the Fight or Flight Tour are designed to complement traditional classroom instruction by connecting students with educational opportunities in the surrounding region.

Meeting an accomplished author provides students with a tangible connection to the writing process and demonstrates how imagination, creativity, and perseverance can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.

The experience also reinforces the importance of reading for enjoyment, particularly among elementary and middle school students who are developing lifelong literacy habits.

Beyond the literary benefits, participating in cultural and educational excursions helps students build confidence, broaden their perspectives, and discover interests that may influence their future academic and career aspirations.

Community Partnerships Make Extraordinary Experiences Possible

The evening was made even more memorable through the generosity of two important community partners.

Penguin Bookstore provided the Brainery students with special VIP treatment during the event, helping create a welcoming and memorable experience for the group.

East Liverpool City Schools extends its sincere appreciation to Penguin Bookstore for its hospitality and commitment to making the evening special for the students.

Additional appreciation goes to the East Liverpool City Schools Education and Scholarship Fund, whose generous support helped make this literary enrichment opportunity possible.

Through this support, every participating Brainery student received an autographed copy of Kinney's newest book, Fight or Flight.

The signed books provide students with more than a souvenir. They serve as lasting reminders of a memorable educational experience and a personal connection to one of the world's most recognizable children's authors.
