Cult classic The Return of the Living Dead coming to the Roxy Theatre
MINERVA -- Just in time for Halloween, the Roxy Theatre in downtown Minerva will bring the 1985 cult horror-comedy The Return of the Living Dead back to the big screen on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The R-rated film will be shown at the historic Roxy Theatre, 114 N. Market St. Tickets are $8 at the door.
Written and directed by Dan O'Bannon, The Return of the Living Dead puts a darkly comedic and distinctly '80s spin on the zombie genre.
The story begins when employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a mysterious military gas that reanimates the dead. As the chemical spreads, the situation quickly spirals out of control, leaving a group of employees, friends and local residents facing a growing horde of brain-hungry zombies.
Starring Clu Gulager, James Karen, Thom Mathews, Don Calfa and Beverly Randolph, the film combines horror, comedy and punk-rock attitude into a movie that has developed a devoted following in the decades since its original release.
The Return of the Living Dead is also credited with helping popularize one of the most recognizable elements of zombie pop culture--the undead craving human brains. Its memorable characters, over-the-top humor, practical effects and punk-influenced soundtrack have helped make it an enduring favorite among horror fans.
Downtown restaurants will be open throughout the evening, and concessions will be available at the theater. The village's Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area will be in effect 4 to 10 p.m. Patrons may purchase beverages in official DORA cups from the Normandy Inn, Stoney Inn, Que Pasa Mexican Restaurant, Tipsy Teller Urban Winery, and Sandy Springs Brewing Company and carry them throughout the designated area, including into the Roxy. No outside beverages may be brought into the Roxy unless they are in DORA cups.
