NORTH GEORGETOWN - The West Branch Area Ladies Ruritan Club met on July 20 for its monthly meeting and annual picnic at the North Georgetown Church of the Brethren. Members attending were Robin Mayer, Bev Yaggi, Jean Zion, Joann Pinkerton, and associate member Abby Elliott. Guests were Sandy and Duane Bates, Bob Pinkerton, Abigail Benner, Jeff and Mariana Benner – parents of Abigail – and Jackson Benner, Abigail's brother.
Duane Bates gave the blessing and the food was enjoyed by all.
Abigail Benner was awarded the club scholarship and a check was given to her by Vice President Yaggi. Abigail graduated from West Branch High School in June and will be attending college to major in nursing.
Abby Elliott discussed some of her Medina, Ohio, community projects such as Project Learn and Medina Cares. Project Learn assists students who are struggling with school subjects and Medina Cares helps families that need assistance in the Medina community.
A pleasant evening was spent socializing with one another
The club's August meeting took place Aug. 17. Members present were Zion, Yaggi, Mayer and Pinkerton. The guest was Charlotte Wafler, invited by Pinkerton.
The club was updated on events at The Brightside Project of Salem by Scott Lewis, founder and director, and Lisa Vittorio, co-director. The organization provides assistance in many ways to children of Columbiana and rural Mahoning counties. They told the club that phase 1 of their expansion was completed with the purchase and renovation of their building at 1909 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem and were in progress with phase 2, The Spark Initiative launching later that week. The club'sregular meeting began with the pledge of allegiance, singing of God Bless America, and a devotion 'Serving Like Christ' read by Zion.
Treasurer Zion gave her report and the club discussed upcoming bake sales on Friday, Aug. 21 at the Damascus Friends Church from 3 to 7 p.m. sponsored by the Damascus Ruritan car show and Saturday, Sept. 5, at Timashamie Family Campground.
Yaggiand Zion updated the club on member Marybelle Metzgar's health.
The club will meet Sept. 21 for its next meeting.
