WELLSVILLE -- The Wellsville Police Department is short on staff, so overtime may increase in the near future.
Lt. Marsha Eisenhart Tuesday told village council members that one of the police officers should know by Sept. 8 if he is going to need surgery and if he does, he will probably be off work until February. The department also has another officer off for military service and next week two officers will be at Camp Fitch as chaperones.
Eisenhart also said that Marathon has added more lanes to transport the gas and oil they get out of the ground and those lanes cost millions of dollars, so they are making a lot of money and she doesn't know if they obtained a permit. She went on to say that Marathon is offering the school district money and asked them what they needed, and they are willing to give them money to cover expenditures.
Eisenhart further said that she feels the village should go after Marathon because there will now be more truck traffic on 17th, Main and Nevada streets.
Village Administrator Jerry Medley said Zoning Officer Rick Williams was on top of the situation. He said Williams spoke with Marathon earlier in the day about it and told them they can't do what they are doing without letting the village know. According to Medley, Williams told him that Marathon said they were going to put some pipelines in and a few other projects, but they would take care of the village and send Williams a list of what they are planning to do and what they are willing to pay.
Mayor Bob Boley said he would get involved.
Medley in his report told council members that the village employees were focused on mowing, with 95% of the mowing done at both the cemetery and Hammond Park.
Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah Yu said the village received first advance of the real estate settlement in the amount of $52,900 which is a combined amount for all the village levies. There will be at least two more advances and a final settlement coming.
Council Member Aaron Smith, who is also on the council's Cemetery/Park/Equipment Committee, told council the committee started handing out letters/flyers to businesses earlier that day regarding a fundraising drive for new playground equipment for Hammond Park. The goal is to raise $3,050 for new equipment.
The committee has also been working on some small projects at the park such as fixing the court and putting pickleball up. They will be putting in two new picnic tables this week that were purchased with a grant. The little league is fixing up another ballfield. There is a three- to five-year plan for the park, and new playground equipment is the first big project on that on that plan.
Smith also reminded them that the Labor Day Car Show will be held Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park. He said he was told there would be stuff for children at the event.
Williams was not present to give a zoning report, and Boley said he had nothing to report on.
Payment of bills totaling $6,060.14 and the minutes from the Aug. 18 meeting were approved as presented.
A motion was made to accept bids for minerals rights on village property including the reservoir, park and cemetery due to the village receiving several inquiries on that. The motion was unanimously adopted, with council members Karen Dash and Michael Lombardozzi absent.
An ordinance to increase appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures of the village for the period of Jan. 1, 2026, to Dec. 31, 2026, passed by emergency measure with a unanimous vote from council members present.
Thorn said he received a letter from Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage requesting a list of all public gatherings areas, schools, day care, churches, parks, hospitals, nursing homes/assisted living facilities and any place where there could be a gathering of people at. They want to submit it to their companies, so they know what areas they would likely be able to provide gas if there is a problem.
The Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 15.
