LISBON -- Columbiana County property owners are reminded the deadline for paying their second-half real estate tax bills falls on Oct. 2, which is next Friday.
County Treasurer Bryan Blakeman talked about the deadline during the county commissioners meeting Wednesday, saying he did a quick check in the morning and learned there have been more than 1,000 online payments so far using the new online payment system.
Tax payments must be received by the due date or postmarked by the due date to avoid any statutory penalties.
The new online payment platform is operational through InvoiceCloud and accepts credit and debit cards, electronic checks, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Even in the office, he said there are new credit card machines on the counter to pay with the tap of a phone.
Visit www.treasurer.columbiana.oh.gov to make online payments, enroll in payment reminders and access information about property taxes.
Blakeman also said 550 to 560 taxpayers have signed up for paperless billing. Automated payment reminders are sent to the taxpayers. He said he's hoping that number continues to grow, noting that lessens the chance for long lines in the courthouse and it's more convenient.
Commissioner Roy Paparodis said he paid his taxes using the new system.
The second-half tax collection has been delayed more than two months. The bills originally carried a due date of July 29, but because of changes put into effect by the state legislature through House Bill 186, which was passed in March and created a tax credit for qualifying property owners, more time was needed to make the calculations and prepare the tax duplicate.
The due date had been extended to Aug. 21, but even more time was needed to make the calculations, with another extension requested to make the due date Oct. 2.
